Well, you can have the 'apple' but you cannot eat it.

Why should this be categorized as a “coin”?! Can someone remind us on a definition of COIN?

How do you like them apples?

It is under non-circulating coins so don't see the issue here.

Please, not this useless  ‘non-coin-discussion’  again.

This is very funny and ridiculous. Why would they make something like this? LOL

Take a penny, leave a penny... or two

I simply love it. Now i want one.

Looks like a AI generated image of an apple to be honest.

Hi to whoever is reading this. Did you know that TYPEWRITER (on a QWERTY keyboard) is the longest word you can type using only the letters on one row of the keyboard.

It gets better (or worse).

PERSIMMON 3D  Copper Coin 100 Francs Cameroon 2025

DONUT 1 Oz Silver Coin 2000 Francs CFA Cameroon 2024

Both will be considered Non-circulating coins (NCLT coins) when they get added to the Numista catalog.

I still can not understand why, time and effort is wasted on useless ‘toys’ like this.
They have nothing to do with coins whatsoever.
It brings down the level of this serious coin-site.

Well they were made by an official bank and have a value written on them, that makes them coins.

I completely agree with yvon. This cannot be seen as coin by any existing definition.

As for the “value written on them” - every item in any supermarket has that too!

Comparing proto-coins to 21st Century ones?!

It is true that evolution has taken a wrong turn sometime in not so far a past, but the way to 3000 years  back is still ahead of us.

Don't forget the Power Coin logo on the pictures.  Power Coin, an Italian company, seems to be at the center of many (most?) of these “coins.”

I suggest you take some of this ‘official-bankmade-coins’, go to Cameroon and try to pay something on a local market there.
I can 100% asure you, you will spend the night (or more nights) in a police-cell. Goodluck.

...you can run,  but you can't hide...

Cameroon uses the Central African or West African Franc, a dull and bland currency that harks back to Mama France for every day money.

Essentially nearly worthless, featuring coins from 5 to 500 Francs and notes to 10 or 20k Francs, worth $20 at most.

Some of these coins were marked Cameroon, but you could use them in Gabon, Congo Brazzaville, Central African Republic etc.

Most people in Cameroon would have no idea of these pieces, but officers at the Banque Nationale du Cameroon may and at the worst you could sell the thing for its silver scrap at the “Exchange d'Argent et Or” in Rue Mobutu, Douala or something.

Indeed, you can call this a medal, a toy, a juwel or whatever you like to think it is, but it is NOT a coin, which can be used to buy something and that is what coins are ment and made for in the first place. The thing you showed here is, maybe, a beautifull piece of art, but it is useless in everydays business.

I think you all have forgotten that not all coins come in round or square shapes.

I personally find them unique and nice and it is great to have it sitting on my desk. If only they were selling them not so expensive!!

Exactly, but its worthless arguing, the guy literally says that non-circulating coins arent coins

“A coin is a small object, usually round and flat, used primarily as a medium of exchange or legal tender. They are standardized in weight, and produced in large quantities at a mint in order to facilitate trade. They are most often issued by a government. Coins often have images, numerals, or text on them. The faces of coins or medals are sometimes called the obverse and the reverse, referring to the front and back sides, respectively. ” (from Wikipedia)

That should not be an issue if the coin is the same size as those circulating types and not in the shape of an apple, persimmon or a doughunt. But then, who wants to pay $10 for a $1 non circulating coin and then try to spend it as $1 at the shop?

Hi friend at what point did I insult you???? by calling this ‘non-coins’ stupid? Do not take it personal, maybe you should try to understand what someone is writing before diving into a non-relevant reply. I am not trying to convince you from anything. This thread is about ‘non-coins’ and my point is: they are not coins, whether you like that or not. They should not even be in our valuated catalogue. I am not here to argue with you or anybody else, so this is my statement and that is it for me.

Numista's Unofficial Soccer Maniac! ⚽

As long at people buy them, they will make them.

The rest of us will just need to turn a blind eye and keep up with the real coins…

Thanks for all the laughs, this thread and your interactions are hilarious!

p.s. my personal opinion is than non coins are indeed not coins, even if one were to call them coins.

Nothing really, I am more amused by them in many ways. I just can't understand the economics in the sense most are only a few hundred or thousand minted and given many are silver, or at least sold at a high price.

How can anyone make money out of them? They just seem stupid and pointless and do the hobby no favours. They are merely designed for fans and collectors of certain topics, themes and memes to buy another unique item for their collection. The secondary market is usually zilcho.

Probably also I am an intellectual snob I guess, I consider skulls, apples, chicken wings, marvel characters etc - inappropriate and dumb topics for coins. But it just my opinion and I turn something i don't like into fun by calling them bubblegum from some thread on Coin Community Family back in 2020 - when someone gave an opinion on $2 coloured Australian coins celebrating some dumb kids TV show or some stupid sports fixture, that had been released by Woolworths.

Finally being a numismatic purist - to me a coin is a piece of metal with a value on it, designed for paying bills/being a circulating currency of some relevant authority. Issuing them as donuts, chicken wings for some poor or insignificant country that has likely never heard of their existence is not numismatic purity.

I don't expect you to like my answer, but hope you at least understand where I am coming from.

I like Moneytane's “bubblegum coins” description 😂

On a more serious note: how about adding a new category (or rather, splitting the NCLTs): CNCLT (Circulating NCLT). No, I'm not joking. As it is now, a lot of coins are categorized as NCLTs when, in reality, they have been circulating. And I'm not talking about a kid taking a coin from father's collection to buy a candy. Here are some random examples:

N#13375

N#8556

https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces43516.html

Both their minting quantities AND grades in collections prove they've been circulating.

Since Numista is a collaborative project, I think we should have a say in defining coins and not blindly follow other catalogues' or mints' announcements.

Bubblgm?

Here is where my bubblegum label comes from - Basil in Australia, who claims the term first appeared in an Australian coin forum around 2010 by someone annoyed at the output of the Perth Mint.

Also too, in 2019 with the first issue of “Aussie Alphabet” coins with 26 x $1 - one actually showed some bubblegum, hence the adhesion of the term to describe nonsensical and “collector” type coin issues of extreme niche interest and produced for profit by bad actors like the Crappo Mint and Scammocoin.

N#183634 - Z Zooperdooper Bubblegum.

Finally I needed a term to go with “Wallpaper stamps”.

An obvious offshoot of the US term Bubblegum Music of the 1960's.

Comparing bubblegum to power pop, Mojo writer Dawn Eden said: "Power pop aims for your heart and your feet. Bubblegum aims for any part of your body it can get, as long as you buy the damn record."

Exactly, also as Bubblegum was an instant hit song, catchy hook and lyrics and an earworm that gets stuck in your head, yet its value wears off over time and even today songs like Sugar Sugar and I got love in my Tummy, have not aged well like say Classic Led Zeppelin, Doors, Beatles, Stones, Hendrix or even The Hollies have.

The other funny thing about late 60s bubblegum, was most of the lyrics were poorly disguised paeans to sex. I  mean you got love in your tummy, well how the heck did it get there. As for Sugar sugar, oh honey honey you are my candy girl and you got me wanting you - well you do the math.

It's the same with these coins, I know most of the truly silly ones like apples, doughnuts and chicken wings have little value even now as topics, but things like bitcoin, dogecoin, Donald Trump and Marvel Characters are all hot topic now, but in 50 years time - no one will care about those topics/themes anymore. So the lesson being - buy the precious metal versions as at least you will have some meltable metal for future generations!
