One penny Victoria 1874 - 2e Type  "bun head" [solved]

6 posts • viewed 166 times

Hello,

I'm French, sorry for my English...

I recently recovered this little Victoria, but not being familiar with this coinage I have some difficulty in clearly identifying it..

9g16.

30.8mm.

7mm wide for the date 1874.

H for the workshop.

Are we on a 1st type or a 2nd type?

If it is the 2nd type as I think likely, how do we know if we are on a large or small date?

Thanks in advance.

Where are all the British experts?

Some lighting is altered for clarity

D:G: Closer to queen on 1st type. D:G: Further from queen 2nd type.

Your example                                                                         2nd portrait 2nd type

2nd portrait 1st type                                                     Small date far from base

 Large date close to base

Yours is 1874 H type 2,  large date.

N#855

Now somebody else can help you with those pesky ribbon details.

He asked here so I answered the question here.

We tend to use either Freeman or Gouby as references for the bronze penny. I can't get my head round the Numista attributions.

This is Freeman 73, Obverse 7, Reverse H.

This is the best online resource that I am aware of:
