Kuala Lumpur coin and banknote shops

9 posts • viewed 352 times

I will be spending a few days in Kuala Lumpur in 2 weeks. I see the shops listed here in the outings page. Does anyone have any experience with either of these shops? I am mainly looking for acquiring bank notes. Any tips, advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Best one I visited: International Stamps & Coin Sdn Bhd

Steven Tan also has written a catalogue for Malaysia and Singapore

Hi

I went 30 days ago, it is kind of hard to find, it is on the second floor of a shopping complex, you will find Argentine bills, I exchanged them for coins.

Steven Tan is one of the pioneers in collectibles in Malaysia. He first started in postage stamps and then moved onto coins and then banknotes. I have a feeling that he may be retired now or at least semi-retired. In my opinion, I believe his banknotes stock are mainly general types, like not those rare or hard to find notes. According to him, the catalogue he published is the price he is selling and to many locals, he is/was selling a bit lower than the current market price. If you go to Pertama shopping complex, as you enter through the main entrance, go up to second floor and walk towards the end of the building. He is located on the last row of shops at the end of the building. His shop has been there since at least the late 70s or early 80s.

The other place you can go on a weekend is Amcorp Mall, starting from 10am. This mall is located in Petaling Jaya (PJ), not far from the Hilton Hotel in PJ. You will find a few dealers there. I believe you will also find many Malaysian banknotes too. Here, you will find some big shots of local collectors gathering enjoying their coffee and talk about their collectibles.😀

Enjoy your holidays.

There are two places in Pertama complex. The one mentioned in earlier posts is very hit and miss on open times, so unfortunately didn’t get to his shop but I did visit the other fairly new shop there. I also went to amcorp flea market mall. It’s amazing and not just banknotes. Central Market has two nice banknote shops as well. In Sunway City there is Dickson New Collection which is very good too.

Plenty of places to get coins and banknotes in the KL area.

thank you all for the information

I am glad that you had a good trip. I hope you find what you were looking for during your visit.

Glad you found something interesting in Malaysia. Due to inflation issues it's really difficult to find coins in circulation. It looks like coins, in some countries, coins just tend to disappear. Thus, local flu markets and/or street vendors are indeed the only way to buy some interesting coins.

I've been recently in Nepal and the only coins I saw there, were those offered by street vendors. In India you still may find the common 10, 5, 2 and 1 rupee in circulation, but you must to be really lucky to find commemorative ones. I was really lucky to buy some ancient ones just outside Agra.

I’ve noticed that coins are not common here in Malaysia. I’ve kept what I’ve gotten. There is a lot of rounding done.

In Thailand, I’m drowning in coins. I kind of wish they would go back to paper 10 and 5 baht notes.

Thailand it's a different story indeed, lots of common coins around!
