Suggestions on what to do with dateless buffalo nickels . (Don't say eHarmony please)

I remember quite some time ago on a forum here,

there is a liquid that can be applied to somehow show the date a little clearer.

From memory called something like ‘Nic-o-date' for dating nickels.

You know, I remember an episode of Forensic Files where they got a serial number off a gun that was supposedly filed off using some acid of some sort and that crossed my mind . I wonder ?

Yes, and the police use similar for stolen cars,

where the serial number on the engine block was attempted to be filed smooth.

If all else fails I will give them to my daughter who dabbles in jewelry and she can use them for sure

Nic-o-date is a nice acidic solution that preferentially corrodes the non-date area against the date area.  It works because the date is less worked hardened than the non-date and so is cathodic to the other area.  Same reason it brings out the SN that's been filed off since the material that's left is anodic to the material around it.

thanks 😁

Nic A Date is not inexpensive.

You can give them an overnight soak in  a solution 2 parts white vinegar and 1 part hydrogen peroxide in a non metallic container.

Do a few at a time.

The next day after the solution turns blue, put in some baking soda and then rinse them off.

You should be able to see the dates.

I've done it.

There is a video on YouTube - go and watch it.

Good  luck.

I found it

Give them to Children. Who knows, you may inspire a new collector. I have given hundreds of Buffalo Nickels and Indian Head cents away over the years. They love them.
