1 Duit 1808 Netherlands East Indies, copper or brass [solved]

I have a duit from 1808 Netherlands East Indies. I found that there is a copper, N#21187, variant of this coin and a brass variant, N#27511

I was wondering how I could tell the difference between copper and and brass to identify wich one I have. The only way I could think of would be to weigh the coin since the catalog lists the copper variant as 3.2 grams and the brass variant as 2.77 grams. Would that work or is the difference in weight within the margin of error for this kind of coin since the difference is only about half a gram. Or is there a better way to tell if I have the brass or the copper variant? any tips would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Comments on brass page.

This is a special presentation strike that was produced by the Mintmaster on demand.

Brass is not standard circulation coin. It should be classified as pattern. If you did not raid museum that has that brass variant, your coin is made of copper.

There is enough difference in weight that goes beyond normal tolerance of the time. Weight should be definitive.

Unfortunately, I don't think the weight can be used.

KM has the specification for the copper version (KM#76) at 2.77 grams.  I can find examples in auction sales ranging from 2.7 to 3.2 grams:

As pointed out by tokul, the brass presentation pieces must be rather rare;  I can't find one in any auction, which also makes me skeptical of the values quoted in KM.  It woud not surprise me if our photo is of a copper type.

Normally in Dutch Republic coins, the off-metal presentation pieces show up in the auction market in high grades because they usually did not circulate.  A bronze vs. brass difference, however would be less obvious.

Lastly the differentiators “Holland” vs. "West Friesland" do not make any sense for these types which were struck with the arms of the Estates General (not either of those provinces), so they will be removed.

Do an XRF-test and you will know the composition, without any reason to doubt.

Hello

Could we have some photos of your coin please

The Numista picture on N#27511 might be wrong. it doesn't looks like a “presentention” coin at all.

Funny thing the rarity is 57 for such a rare coin.

My guess is the picture is wrong, the referee accepted the image and lots of users added wrongly on their collections.

I would merge km#76 with km#76a

1. I agree.

2. I agree.

3.  No.  Different composition … one is standard circulating coin, the other is not.  This is enough for two listings.

Looks like COPPER to me.

Looks too ugly to be a Presentation Coin

A lot can happen in 200 years, I will look ugly too in 200 years :(

It looks like copper to me too. Brass from this age will look more 'darkgreen-blackish'.

Agree about the wearing, but looks like a bad strike
