Strange lead coin or token identification [solved]

8 posts • viewed 164 times

Its either  a coin or a token

It weighs - 9.94g

With a diameter of - 25mm

Thickness - 2mm

It was difficult to get a good photo, but i think i can make out some of the lettering.

On this side, i think it says

I.COR

XL. (something else)

On the other side i think it says

GAETH

(word begging with either a C or G)

then looks like either 1966 or 1766

Any help is appreciated can’t find much on it thanks in advance 👍

It looks like a lead Hop Token - they have similar designs.

The XL is Roman Numerals for 40 - unless it means extra large.

Although, the other lead tokens I have heard of are for Communion,

which also include a date - which yours looks like 1766 or similar,

given it is well worn and not likely 1966 date.

 Here is an 8-sided token

https://www.abccoinsandtokens.com/BR.5926.003.html

which yes is only a little like yours, or not.

Thank you so much, i honestly had no clue i will continue looking 👍👍

The I COR lettering maybe from the Bible -

I Corinthians XI [then some numbers] meaning, for example, with 23 29

 1 Corinthians 11:23-29 - King James Version

23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you,

that the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread.

So I is Roman 1 for 1st Corinthians [the COR lettering]

then XI again Roman, for book 11

which then leaves the worn-out numbers to work out the passage.

I tried a Search on here and found an 1826 token >

N#380458

which is partly like yours.

 I think I found it -

the first line AE lettering is in GAELIC

then the worn next line could be Chapel [in lower case].

with the last line a 1775 date [or similar].

There is a drawing about half way down this [Edinburgh] page

https://threadinburgh.scot/2022/08/30/the-thread-about-the-edinburgh-gaelic-chapels-and-the-spiritual-wanderings-of-the-citys-gaels/

Quote: Back to the Gaelic chapel, it issued its own communion tokens with a

verse from Corinthians on the back. The New International Bible gives this verse as

“Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup.

For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment

on himself.” The date of 1775 most likely refers to the appointment of the minister.

Though yours could be a different date, say 1776 or other.
