What subject would you like to see commemorated on a coin ?

Hello ,

Many countries issue coins that commemorate  aspects of their culture , geography , history and so on , but there are always things that deserve to be commemorated with a coin , but have not been so(yet) . So what subject would you like to see put on a commemorative coin from your country ?

Hello there,

Now, this is not a modern idea, but kind of a complaint. When the Free City of Danzig celebrated its 10th anniversary (15 November 1930), they issued a run of stamps with a special overprint.

And, personally, as a coin collector, I find it sad that they didn't issue coins for this occasion. :(

Ooh, now that is a good question.

I suppose for me, I would like to see a greater increase in local / national mythology.

Whilst we do have a few in the UK (We recently got King Arthur & Loch Ness Monster 10p coins as part of the A-Z), I'd love to see more in that style.

Things like the monsters Lambton Worm, the Kelpies, Black Shuck, or any number of wizards, warlocks, crones, druids and the like or heroes like Beowolf, Robin Hood. We have such a rich tapestry and I think it's a shame so much of it basically is forgotten.

I know the Royal Mint has been churning out bullion with some of those “big name” topics, but we just don't get to enjoy them in day-to-day usage.

Some would probably translate really well onto banknotes as well where there's just so much more space. Imagine a King Arthur one with maybe 3-5 of the most famous myths. Or pair them up with real-world locations (e.g. Tintagel Castle or Glastonbury Tor).

Not sure about subject but it would cool to see the world come together and have all countries issue a circulating commemorative with a common motif like world peace. That would be quite a challenge to track down all 180-190 coins.

Blue-M - what a lovely idea. Something which maybe celebrates our shared humanity on one side & a “national” side the other.

Could even interlink it. E.g. if the global theme was “The Arts”, the global side could be a stylised depiction of reading, enjoyment of music, watching plays etc, and the national side could depict an author, composer, playwright from that nation.

Really love that idea.

Actually, I'm a bit surprised that the eurozone has not started anything like the 10 p coins of the “Great British coin hunt” mentioned here - the serie of circulating commemoratives which would celebrate European values, history etc. I know that it would be complicated legally and logistically, but it would also attract many people to coin collecting in my opinion (regardless of what one might think about the whole project of the EU). There could be for example important figures of the European integration, some of which are unjustly forgotten in my opinion (like the count Coudenhove-Callergi).

Of course, I don't know if such coins actually circulated in the UK (or Australia with  a similar project), otherwise it wouldn't make too much sense I think.

Anyway, sorry for my ranting, but these ideas just struck me when I have seen this thread.
