lack of meaning in the denominations

Hi Numista

I was doing my research and I realized something, 5 bolivars in 2 and 1 bolivar coins and the 5 bolivar coin make absolutely no sense! Considering that all silver coins with denominations less than 5 bolivars have a purity of 835, the 2-bolivar coin is 10 grams of 835 silver, and the 1-bolivar coin is 5 grams of 835 silver.

Considering this, 5 bolivars in denominations of 2 and 1 bolivars would be 10 + 10 + 5, which would give a result of 25 grams of 835 silver.

Now, what doesn't make sense to me is that the 5-bolivar coin is 25 grams of 900 silver, not 835 silver. This would make the silver in the 5-bolivar coins more expensive than their denomination, or would the 1 and 2-bolivar coins be worth less than their denomination.

Do you also think this doesn't make any sense?

It's perfectly correct:

but the table does not show the silver purity of the coins

Then add it! Are you sure the 0/00 are correctly transmitted to numista?

⅕ Bolívar: gram. 1 LEI 835.

¼ Bolívar: gram. 1.25 LEI 835.

½ Bolívar: gram. 2.5 LEI 835.

1 Bolívar: gram. 5 LEI 835.

2 Bolívares: gram. 10 LEI 835.

5 Bolívares: gram. 25 LEI 900.

2+2+1 Bolívares in coins of 1 and 2 Bolívares = 5 Bolívares 25 gram. LEI 835

Coin of 5 Bolívares = 25 gram. LEI 900

Strange with the 900 0/00 on the 5 bolivares. Was it tested for that? We would not know!

Is there any test to determine the purity of silver without having to rely on the inscriptions on the coins?

There is, but I don't have the tool, try a jeweler shop, if you have one the 900 lei coins.:

I have the LEI 900 one, but I don't know if any jewelry store in Arauca will have that tool.

Can you call and ask the shop?

To start with, no one in my house has the phone number of any jewelry store and I won't return to Arauca until June-July and considering how far Arauca is from Cravo Norte, it's a 5-6 hour bus ride and the ticket costs more than 80,000 Colombian pesos.

I see the problem.

Take care

Looking at your collection, I see that you have the 1, 2, and 5 bolivar silver coins, so you could take them to a jewelry store to find out their silver purity.
