Misprinted Icelandic 1000 ISK – Front Print Appears on Back

6 posts • viewed 121 times

Hi everyone,

I recently came across a 1000 Icelandic Króna banknote with what seems to be a significant misprint. The front design (the portrait and text) appears to be printed over the back side of the note. The regular back print is still there, but you can clearly see parts of the front design overlapping it.

It looks like a genuine printing error rather than ink transfer or damage, and the note seems authentic with normal security features intact (watermark, security thread, etc.).

I’ve attached photos for reference (front and back).

Does this kind of error have any collector value? Has anyone seen something similar with Icelandic banknotes before?

Any input or guidance is appreciated!

Wet ink transfer, and yes, it is considered as an error note and is a pretty good one too imo. The images transferred are also very clear too. Great find.

Agree with @ahkai great offset printing error.

I agree. A super find.

Total offset transfer errors are scarce. I collect error notes - many offset transfers are partial. I have very few total offset transfer errors.

Generally, very approximately 0.5% of notes are error notes (based on the incidence of replacement notes - studies on US and Irish banknotes) - much fewer would leak into circulation, I think.

Snap!  Just picked up this 5000 Kronur note and noticed the same thing, looks like more of a partial image error.

Are these notes always worth more than ‘correct’ ones?

Yes, errors are always worth more (a significant premium) over what you would pay for the regular version in the same condition. How much more is entirely dependent on how dramatic the error, how popular the series, etc.  How “dramatic” the error depends on the amount (area of the note) covered by the error (25% 50% 75% or 100% covered in offset print) & the intensity (transfer) of the ink + condition (VF- UNC?).

Re:

There may be exceptions like special serial numbers (solid radars, #1 note, ladders), rare replacements/prefixes which could be as much or more than an error (depending on the error).  Again, this depends on many factors including how popular the series is (how any people chase the series, etc).
