Are we having lines for different height numerals?

The 2 Fen notes are listed according to the height of the numerals:

2 Fen - People's Republic of China – Numista

Also the 5 Fen notes:

5 Fen - People's Republic of China – Numista

But the 1 Fen is listed only by the three types, no mention of height. Numista knows 3 types of this note only.

But there are 5 types:

3 Roman Control Numbers and Serial #

3 Roman Control Numbers only - 3.5mm in height

3 Roman Control Numbers only - 4mm in height
2 Roman Control Numbers only - 3.5mm in height

2 Roman Control Numbers only - 4mm in height

Banknote.ws only knows about the two different heights of the numerals on the note with 3 Roman Control Numbers only.

I recently bought two of the other notes, the one with 2 Roman Control Numbers only. I measured them, one is 3.5mm in height and the other is 4mm. So both numeral heights exist on that version also!

If those lines get added, how do you know where to move existing owners to?

Heh, you don't! This can be a problem at times. Existing owners would be moved to ‘undetermined’.

I will make a request for modification.

These are my two notes (with two control numerals):

Hey, I'm wondering if these are just minor variants - like tint shades. Does anyone know if the height differences are specific to a certain range of control numbers?

I don't know, I don't have enough of these notes to discern a pattern.

But for now, here is the situation:

1. The 2 Fen has multiple lines listed on Numsta for different height numerals

2. The 5 Fen has multiple lines listed on Numista for different height numerals

It seems to me the 1 Fen should be made the same. That's what I was trying to say in my modification request, which I see has been rejected.

Hey odd job,

Your rejected modification request was for the replacement of the existing comments field with a note about the varieties, rather than for the addition of lines for those varieties. Please note that the multiple lines for different-height numerals on the 2 Fen and 5 Fen pages are being considered for merging.

Criteria for the cataloguing of varieties and variations is currently being discussed here: https://en.numista.com/forum/topic161394.html

The reason I put the lines in the comments field rather than ask for them to be changed directly is because I didn't know what would happen to the existing owners whose notes were in the three lines that would disappear.

However that's moot, if the other notes get merged entries that works also, at least it is consistent then!

Is there a message that goes out to owners that their notes have been moved from one line to another?

The appearance of one's item as being catalogued as “Undetermined” might signify the creation of new/split entries. On the other hand, it's easier to merge lines as user entries would all be in an existing line.

The thing is, one of my Egypt notes got moved to undetermined and I was none the wiser. The only reason I found it was because I was going over Arabic serial numbers in my collection.

It would be a nice feature if the owners got a system generated message if a note gets moved to a new line. Bonus would be if it described the previous line and the new one.

I like this idea
