Hello everyone!
Recently my friend showed me a huge copper coin, and rightfully so, I found a bigger one to show him. This game ended with a 98mm diameter Notgeld that I showed.
So a new question came up: which are the smallest and largest coins or notes in a given type?
Finding the absolute extremes is easy, but narrowing it down within a specific type isn’t always straightforward. Of course, I noticed that there were already some posts pointing out some of the coins they felt were the largest, but it was too confusing, so I felt the need to add some restrictions to this thread:
- It has to be a single coin or note, i.e., it can't be in the form of a die or specimen
- It must be issued by a recognized or recorded issuing authority
- Medal and Token are not counted. If Numista doesn't have them, please provide some pictures or information
- Locator currencies are not counted (e.g. Chinese 10,000 yuan gold coins or large investment coins)
- I don't want to start a coin definition debate again, but some ancient “coins” will not be counted. Yap Islands coins for example.
In fact I'll admit that this is rather broad. Many people are simply interested in a particular area, so we must categorize. So if you can, you can add Numista catalogs and classifications, which can be national or of a particular type, for example:
- German Notgeld:
Largest Coin: 98.4mm, 0.20 Goldmark, Westfalen
N#328424
Smallest Coins: 16.2 mm, 1 Pfennig, Hamm
N#185447
These are the two limits I can find that I know of, but I'm still clueless about Notgeld's banknotes. We can start with a period of time in a country and work our way up to an area!
I look forward to the discussion!
