Obviously he hid them there, when he knew he could no longer appreciate them with failing eyesight or mobility, or possibly could have been dementure and he forgot about them, but unlikely if stuffed in a wall.

 

Also maybe he felt no one around him was worthy of owning these coins, and he did not want to sell them as what would he do with the money at his age.

 

It's a sad tale and makes me wonder what most of us will do with our collections when we die or even if are not in a position to really appreciate or do anything with them.

Just goes to show, all is vanity, of course.

No heirs, or any charity thought of.  A mean way to go out.

 

I think if I did not have any heir I thought worthy, I would endow the local survival center, and food bank, and other charities I regularly  donate to, rather than leave it to some nosey Notary to turn up and claim for the State.
