The oldest surviving written mention of the town is found in a deed of donation from Emperor Otto II.
The town became famous, firstly, for the Battle of Dettingen on June 27, 1743, in which the British-Hanoverian army, under the personal command of King George II of Great Britain, won a victory over a French army.

As part of the administrative reform in Bavaria, Dettingen am Main merged with the neighboring Großwelzheim to form the municipality of Karlstein am Main on July 1, 1975.
