2023 UK silver Britannia £2 "error"? coin

6 posts • viewed 177 times

I received a bunch of coins from an auction today, among them were some 1oz silver Britannia coins, and one was in an envelope marked “error” . This is a 2023 Queen Elizabeth II . They were minted in late 2022 I believe, so some may have been sold before, or not long after she died, is this what they constitute as an error, or are there any known errors (alignment is correct)? Anyone have any idea of how many may have been sold, they are only bullion coins, but if not many were released, would they become collectable ?

It’s not an error as I purchased one from the Royal Mint website, I think they were on sale at the time or shortly after the Queen passed away. While yes they as less common as they were minted for only a few months until they switched over to Charles III portrait in mid 2023 I believe.

Hi to whoever is reading this. Did you know that TYPEWRITER (on a QWERTY keyboard) is the longest word you can type using only the letters on one row of the keyboard.

This?

I didn't stick around long enough to figure out what the error is.

Thanks for the replies, I didn't think the fact it was QEII rather than KCIII would make it an error, probably could be classed as NIFC? Can't see if it is a strike through, it is rather badly tarnished (or “TONED” if I was selling it). Whatever it is, it is just 1oz of silver to me, but I would be interested in the mintage figures.

Mintage is definitly lower than 2021 and 2022 issues because coin was producent for shorter period… but anyway, I guess this will be multiple thousands of pieces which make this coin not unique.

See the past sales: there is one piece certified by Royal Mint as one of last 500 pieces minted (and other one as 43rd to end). And there are currently 112 pieces only from 2023 avaliable for swap (probably the “normal” ones, not from the “last 500” edition, so this is why I guess the total mintage is multiple thousands of coins.

I agree there would be less minted overall than in the previous years however because I ordered both coins within several months of one another a fair amount would have been minted regardless until the dies with Charles on was ready.
