Korean Key Plate/Charm?

7 posts • viewed 59 times

Hello! I hope this is the right forum. I found this at Goodwill with a very non-descriptive title of “Brass Wall Hanging". I've done a Google search and I think it's Korean, possibly old. I posted it a few places on Reddit but the only helpful comment was that they thought it was a Korean numismatic charm and at least 100 years old. Others said it was not old and a mass produced trivet or plate, but I can't find any kind of makers mark. It looks like it was originally meant to hang, not sit on a table to me though.

I'm hoping to find more information about this, like what it is, where it's from, and if it's worth finding an appraiser. I'm in North Georgia, USA so I've had trouble online finding any somewhat local appraisers who might know about Asian art, coins, or artifacts.

It's approximately 16x21cm (6x8 in), nonmagnetic, weighs 368g (13oz)  according to my kitchen scale, and the edges are quite sharp. There are different markings on both sides. These are the best photos I could manage with my phone. Thank you for any information you can provide!

Very interesting. How big is the banana? Or better yet, what is the diameter of the big “coin” in the center?

I missed the dimensions you posted.  Sorry.

That's ok! I think I posted in the wrong forum anyway (oops). The larger coin shape is right at 4cm or just a bit over an inch and a half

This is a good forum but you may get more response if posted in the Coin Information forum.  I don't think the one I posted is a coin. Might be a charm. No idea if authentic or not. I'm looking for some of the others. This is a good forum but you may get more response if posted in the Coin Information forum. There are members with much more experience that me that may recognize if they are coins and real.

Here's some coin shops which may be local to you. https://en.numista.com/outings/index.php?c=etats-unis&r=3611&s=2025-07-12&e=&shop=on&p=1&o=t

Thanks! I'll post it there too and check out the information you sent :)

This appears to be part of a Korean chatelaine with many parts missing and were attached to the many holes in the plate. These were part of a wealthy brides wedding garment and had other metal pieces (coins) and Korean knotted strings attached. Those who collect Korean charms often collect these items and appear in Korean charm catalogs.

OK, I found this exact chatelaine in the book “Cast Korean Coins and Charms” by Wyrand Op den Velde and David Hartill (2013), page 359 #1013. The complete description: MC107.10, K Y-42, KCY I-80 ER; 17.5 x 21.2 cm

Various charms surrounded by an ornate Dragon border. The charm in the middle (583)  celebrates the proclamation of the Crown Prince. Much counterfeited.

#583 The Crown Princess 10,000 Years. Minted in 1907…Korean Crown Prince (inner ring), Prince Imperial Yeong.

No values are quoted and I have no idea if this is a counterfeited example.
