Hel identifying silver portrait medal (engraver from Argentina)

7 posts • viewed 66 times

I'd like to show you this beautiful silver medal and ask if anyone might know who is depicted on it?

A few days ago, I bought a small collection of Swedish silver medals, and this one was among them. It appears to be engraved by the Argentinian engraver J.M. Lubary, who was active at least between 1896 and 1927 (he lived from 1862 to 1938).

I have tried to find more information, but without success.

The edge and reverse are blank, although the reverse has a very finely finished, clean surface. It weighs ca 160 g (5,6 oz) and the diameter is ca 70 mm (2.75").

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated!

Thank you :) I now managed to find an interesting page about Jorge Maria Lubary. The text mentions a medal of Sarah Bernhardt:

Translated to English:
"Sara Bernhardt, Anatole France and other characters
Years later he had other achievements very commented in his time. One of them was when in 1905, the top of the dramatic hierarchy, Sarah Bernhardt, made her third visit to Buenos Aires. The “Divine Sarah”, already in her sixties, was presented, as always successfully, at the old Opera and Lubary paid tribute to her with a modern medal that presents the effigy in profile of the exalted artist, reflecting in its design the French culture that was in vogue in our country in the most varied fields."

I think this medal might be the one he made of her, but I am not a 100% sure. Here (above) are some portraits of her for comparison, what do you think?

(The two marked with red and “1905” are from the year the medal of Sarah Bernhardt was made.)

Most likely, with that distinctive fringe.

This (dated 1901) below also is ‘presumed’ …

Thank you for that example. It really seems to be her :)

The medal of Sarah Bernhardt you are speaking about was quite different :
