German 5 Mark Coins

I am new to collecting coins and obviously have lots to learn.  I purchased these 2 coins in a small lot of Post War Fantasy Coins, and I believe they are real currency.  I did a little research but I figured there were several experts here who could confirm this😉.  Any information on these would be greatly appreciated.

When posting about identification and authenticator of coins you also need to provide diameter and weight of the coins.
That said the first at least looks like a normal genuine 5 Reichsmark.

The second I don't believe is real it imitates a private pattern coin: N#116745

Apologies for not including dimensions…they are approximately 1 ½".

The patina and the hair on Hindenburg's head look suspicious to me. I'm pretty certain that the Hindenburg 5 is a replica, too.

In determining whether a coin is a fake, not just the coin, but also the way it was acquired is important. Did you buy them below silver price? Did you buy them from China? Was it sold or given to you by someone who had great story about their provenance, without proof? Did you get more coins from the same source which proved to be replicas?

Did you try to see if they are attracted to magnet, it's the first thing to do? Those coins are supposed to be silver, so not attracted!

😂 approximately 1 ½ inches, so is that about a tolerance of about 4mm then?

Anyway in this case both are irrelevant, as they are copies or fakes or fantasy coins (as listed when you bought them). The details of both coins are not correct, in some instances details are missing completely, so unfortunately your belief they are real currency is completely wrong.

The William II coin from Prussia (1913) is as pointed out a copy of a Pattern coin, one of these coins would be very very expensive. The Hindenburg (1938) is far more common, and you can pick these up in decent condition for a bit over silver value - I would recommend you bought one of these and compared the two side by side, observing the difference in details, weight and surface feel at the same time, that way you can gain some experience to tell the difference in the future.

These are garbage copies of original coins and Götz medals.

Good job, guys. Scared that new member away.  I am new to collecting coins and obviously have lots to learn.  Guess they decided to learn elsewhere.

I don’t think we scared him away, how can anyone be scared on a forum using a „username“ which basically makes them anonymous - I would guess they knew they were fake as the Pattern coin probably had „FAKE“ written on the top right corner (which the OP removed before uploading the images) and were bought in a lot of „Fantasy coins“ which he/she stated.

I would also guess that the reason the OP created the account, posted the question and then deleted the account all within close proximity is that the real question was (and this is pure speculation) „I bought these coins in a lot of fakes and fantasy coins, but these two seem the most likely to fool someone into believing they are real, I want to sell them as real coins to try and make some money, will they fool anyone or the experts on this forum? If so I can use this thread as evidence they could be genuine and maybe sell them for a quick profit.“

They also said they “had a lot to learn“ which implies they are willing to listen and learn from the answers, if the OP was genuinely interested in learning about their new collection, they wouldn’t have closed their account and would have been more interested in how they were spotted as copies so quickly. I would also have been interested in acquiring them for my fake collection had the OP stuck around, I mean the 1938 coin was obvious from the start but the 1913 coin I had to look a bit closer and compare to other images to make up my mind (as I have never seen any German State pattern coins in real life - something i wouldn’t have had to do if the word in the top right corner of the flip wasn’t removed….

Scared was probably the wrong English word for a multilingual audience.  Probably should have used the “condescending and sarcastic replies.”  That was even before your last insulting reply where you accused them of trying to gauge just how much they could scam somebody.

Well I never thought that to start with, only after the OP deleted his account and I looked again at the images noticing the erased word and the possible leg on an F sticking out as the first letter under the erased section. Also i didn’t accuse, I speculated that that might have been the reason the OP disappeared. As indicated by my words „pure speculation on my part“ contained in brackets before the sentence.

It is after all just as a valid possible reason as your „scared him away with the replies“ reason. I doubt anyone who posts on this forum (or on any internet forum for that matter) is a scared shy cat afraid to read a reply, and where granted I understand what you are getting at with the possibility that some child may have bought their first lot of coins and asked a question with some naivety, if the OP was genuine then he/she would have genuinely learned from the replies, it is nothing to be ashamed of, we all learn - I was once told a brassy nail was made of gold by builders as a child, I believed, was upset and learned - I didn’t run away from builders afterwards, nor would I have run away from builders if I had gone to them and asked them if my brassy nail was gold and they told me otherwise!

I also didn’t think any of the replies were condescending or sarcastic, (i didn’t agree with the junk comment) but I didnt think it out of order, some people call copies „junk“ and it is their opinion, as I also said in my „insulting“ (no it is an alternative opinion to your view, not insulting or intended as such) reply, “I would have been interested in acquiring them for myself“ which was my view (though not expressed) from the start in my first reply where I gave genuine advice, so why would I try to be insulting or sarcastic - I would recommend anyone who wants to learn how to recognise silver coins to buy cheap silver (melt value) coins to get a feel for them, which is easy for a coin like the 1938 Hindenburg as it is readily available.

I read all posts with a sense of humour and a smile on my face, since one of my first posts where I read one reply and got upset because their opinion was different from mine, asking „if they were part of the forum police“, I realised afterwards that I had probably overreacted due to my personal feelings at the time and viewed the post/reply as negative when reading it, had I been thinking happy thoughts as I read it I may not have got upset and thought of this reply as just helpful advice, which I am sure it was - so since then I read all post as helpful advice / opinions which are not meant to upset (it truly helps when reading them), so I am wondering if you are seeing sarcasm, condescendence or insults where nothing was meant?

edit: junk comment was the garbage comment.

I decided to rejoin the group but I have had to use a new username (was danm04).  The last thing I wanted to do was create any animosity in the group and I do apologize if anyone was offended.

My intention was to learn about these coins were sincere and I was not trying to gain information purely with the intention of reselling.

Also, I was not scared off…I just did not appreciate the comments of one person and I should have made the effort to clarify things.

Anyways, I hope to learn (which I clearly have lots to know) and interact with fellow enthusiasts.

Thank you,

Dan
