Catalog under Annam?

Discussion about Vietnam, Empire of • 10 Cash - Thành Thái (Thông Bảo)

Hello,

I see that Krause catalogs these coins under the Protectorate of Annam, is there a reason that we do not? Just curious and trying to make my collection as accurate as I can. Appreciate it, thanks!

Hi Matt,

Vietnam around that time is a real can of worms.

Annam was a french protectorate and a constituent part of French Indo-China. But it was also nominally ruled by the Nguyen Dynasty as a continuation of the Empire of Vietnam which had been around for about a thousand years.

The rulers of the Nguyen Dynasty issued some of their own coins so where to list them is a bit subjective.

Personally I concentrate my collecting on the 20th Century and so I list Annam (as well as Tonkin and French Cochin-China) as regions of French Indo-China.

But they could be listed several ways.

Regards

Lee

I figured. Thank you very much for the reply!
