When adding items to the catalog, we can select top categories like “Coins” or “Emergency coins” instead selecting more specific categories like “Standard circulating coins” or “Siege coins”. It results in items being lost when one uses category filters in search tool (as mentioned in this topic). The suggestion is to allow only low lever categories to be selected.

I know users must fill adding form correctly and referees are there for that, but mistakes happen some times.

I agree. And as another poster commented in the other thread, an other category would be beneficial. Maybe even an I'm not sure category that would flag the entry so others can help determine the correct category.

I agree, but not in all cases. There are intermediate categories/types that have objects. For example:

  • Sport venue tokens has two subtypes, Swimming pool tokens, and Skating ring tokens, but the parent type must be used by other sport venue tokens.
  • Souvenir medallions has one subtype Elongated coins, and other souvenir medals has the parent type.

Yes, but as was said here https://en.numista.com/forum/topic152622.html#p1199802

Adding an “other” in every level would be a solution … but would also clutter everything and make lists longer.
