Hello, I'm one of the younger numismatists here in Numista, but I find collecting coins really interesting. There are lots of interesting coins, valuable finds and rare varieties out there, and I want to know what you did along the way to get some of that fun. I hope there will be lots of interesting and exciting posts here and that we will each learn a little bit more about collecting coins.

I've met many wonderful people and have had many great experiences with shop keepers, other collectors and people who don't even collect coins. I wrote up a post on my transit coin collection you can read if you like. I also play a large variety of online text based games. Been playing a few for over 10 years with the same group of people, and the few times I mentioned I collected coins the other players offered to mail me a few coins.

I coin roll hunt probably 8-10 rolls a week while I watch Netflix or listen to music and I enjoy the surprise and anticipation. Often times I find nothing special, but every so often Ill find a nice quality wheat penny, or a state quarter I am missing. You can also find some really interesting damage patterns from full zinc rot with holes through coins, or when coins are almost completely smooth with very little design left. I enjoy wondering about the life of that coins, who owned it or what happened to it to get that damage.

I hope this is some of what you are looking for. I have not found many rare coins though I have pulled a few silvers out of rolls and thats always a good day.

The most interesting experience I had was when I went camping with the family a few years ago. I was putting up the tent, one of the pegs I was hammering in hit something hard.  I went to dig it out, and it turned out to be a 5 cent coin from my birth year (1978) It's a bit beaten up and buckled, but I keep it in my wallet as a good luck token.

What? Me Worry

Hello LT,

I started buying some gold and silver coins starting years ago for savings, instead of putting all my money in the banks. I really liked the look of them, especially the Chinese pandas and other ones with animals on them, but they are all very much the same and sit in a safe. I then bought a bulk batch of mixed small old coins from my normal shop (for the metal value), and got really fascinated with the history of money and how the coins that people carried and used every day are still (probably more) valuable today.

From that, I started swapping with some very friendly people here on Numista, and now I check my pockets regularly for shiny coins with lustre. My Euro collection is growing, and luckily here in Ireland we got lots of tourists, so I already have many European countries in each denomination.

My Coin collecting started very much the same way. I was out camping with my family and found a penny in the fire pit when I was setting logs. It was from my birth year (97), and from that day onwards I spent every dollar I came across looking for 1997 pennies. I now have 9 dollars worth of  1997 pennies as well as hundreds more in various other currencies, gold, silver, etc.

Here it is, it's ugly, but I love it

I was in a pub having a pint and browsing ebay looking at Jersey coins and joblots of Jersey coins. There was a particular magnetic type Jersey 10 pence I wanted in my collection the newer type. I go to the bar to get another drink. Got the magnetic Jersey 10p I wanted back in my change. In mainland UK getting a Jersey coin back in change happens every so often if that when not actively looking for coins in bags from banks. Technically not legal tender though they do sneak into our circulation sometimes but this coincidence was very uncanny and one I will never forget. Haven't saw that coin in change ever since either. There's been a few other occurrences but this one the most noteworthy.

Its funny how that works you know? My cousin lives in Singapore and I asked her to keep a lookout for a few coins from Singapore and surrounding areas and then went to get a few rolls of nickels from the bank. the first roll I opened was 1 coin from Singapore and another from Japan. Ask and you shall receive I guess lol.
