Hi all.
I found this medal in amongst 3kg of mixed foreign coins, and from what I can tell, it's of Polish origin, marking (I assume) the Pope's visit to Czestochowa. The obverse is similar to a couple of other Polish medals except there are no dots around the edge. I know this means nothing overall, but the others with this same profile have dots. The reverse shows the Jasna Góra monastery in the town, as well as a small image of, who I've found to be, Our Lady of Częstochowa (The Black Madonna). I've not been able to find this reverse on any medals/tokens.
The nearest I've found is - N#137725
The measurements are -
Weight - 26.4g
Thickness - 3.4mm
Diameter - 36.9mm
Edge - smooth
Most medals of this type for JPII appear to be somewhat smaller. Can anyone please confirm;
It is Polish
It's most likely Aluminium
Has no face value?
As I've been hunting high & low for a while and not found anything, can anyone please let me know any other info on the item? Rare? Mintage? etc…? I hate mysteries that linger!!
Thanks.
