All of these are American, of course. Technically if my Grandfather's change finds that he gave to me count, my oldest Cent is 1904 and my oldest Quarter is 1943.
I also got a 1921-B Swiss 5 Rappen from him. Otherwise my oldest foreign find would be one of my early 2000's German Euro coins.
Unfortunately in the UK we won't find anything older than 1971 due to decimalisation, unless it's a foreign coin of very similar size slipped in there by mistake or purposely to fraud someone of their correct change.
Back when we had larger coins I used to find shillings, sixpences, florins in my change that were from the 1940s. Now we've changed to reduced size currency, the earliest coin I can find is the 1991 $1 and $2 coins.
In Switzerland during the summer (I'm Swiss) I found a 1885 10 rappen coin.
Since the 10 and 20 rappen coins have been the same (to a large extent, only change of metal: nickel to copper nickel) since 1875, it's possible to find coins in circulation from 2 centuries ago.

You're lucky. The oldest I got from my grandfather's change, not his actual collection, was a 1933 sixpence.

Do you ever get any pennies from the 1970's or 80's?
Oldest foreign coin in circulation: 1950's Canadian dime.
Hmmmm you just sparked an idea.
My oldest foreign change find that I found In that country would be one of my German Euro coins. I've found foreign coins from the '80s here in the U.S.

New Zealand didn't have pennies in the 70s and 80s. We went decimal in 1967, but since sixpences, shillings and florins were the same size as the 5c, 10c and 20c coins they quite often turned up in circulation after they had been officially withdrawn. Unfortunately we changed to smaller coins in 2006 so the chance of picking up an old florin dissappeared.

Aren't sixpences supposed to be lucky? There weren't many valuable coins as far as I could see, just the coins he'd picked up in change during his travels of the world. Then again, I wasn't as advanced of a collector as I am now.
Americans and the Swiss are so lucky, having 100+ year old coins around! As Tony said, the oldest UK coins in circulation are pennies and tuppences from 1971.

As a kid I found sometimes French silver francs or half francs from the early XXth century. They would sound weird and I remember thinking they had something special, but didn't identify what at the time.
My grand parents though had sometimes seen Roman asses (around ten grams of copper most of the times) used as 10 centimes coins when they were kids (they were born before 1900).
Not that old, but seeing coins from the Roman times as they were kids was seemingly not so unfrequent as they told me. Of course they have passed away, and for quite a while now
I have found quite a few older coins over the years. Many pennies from the 40's and 50's. Some wheat pennies. I have found a couple of silver dimes (1943 & 1950) and a bobcat quarter.
I'm in America and the oldest coin I've received in my change was a 1875-S 20 Cent Piece as a quarter. It was absolutely hideous, but I still sold it on Ebay for $45. Not bad for an outlay of .25!
I got a 1964 Florin in the change once back home in Britain, as a new 10p coin (actually my mum got it and gave it to me), and when I moved to Hong Kong, I found a 1961 QEII Ten Cents in the change.
I had a dream that I found a 1960 Canadian silver quarter in my change yesterday, and it was one of those realistic dreams where I thought it had actually happened, so I spent 5 minutes searching for it in my room this morning.
The oldest coins I've found are some pennies from the thirties

Once, I dreamed about a beautiful brunette girl who had visited me with a hand full of gold coins and I thought it was very realistic dream, just like yours.
So the next day I kindly waited for that girl and her coins, but when I got my change back at the local supermarket a 60 year old 'girl' with her hair dyed in a brunette colour gave me a hand full of 10 eurocent (gold colour) coins, because she ran out of coins with a higher denomination.
So yeah, those dreams can be very realistic, only not always in a very positive way!

You, my friend, deserve a thumbs up for this story. It's a story of our lives.
Whatever dreams I had that became realistic weren't coin related, and they were "short and stupid," for a lack of better words. But regarding coins, the oldest coin I've found in change was probably a 1913 cent in my change, a 1920's Buffalo nickel, 1943 Mercury dime, 1950-something quarter (it was strangely BU, too), but only a 1964 Kennedy half. Dollar coins would have to be a 1971 Ike dollar; they don't really get any older than that in change.
My friends get mystefied whenever they see an Ike dollar in change. They can't get the name of the portrait right though. I had a friend who once thought Ike was Reagan, to which I told him, "Reagan would have to be dead to be on any coin, and he wasn't even president. Even if he was, Eisenhower deserves to be on the dollar much more than an actor." And no, I don't think disappointing Obama should ever be on coins. There was once a talk about Obama being on a new series of polyester banknotes.
The oldest foreign coin I ever found in my pocket would easily be a 1926 Canadian penny.

They were found in an old box in my old house when cleared out from the place. I thought it was interesting and saved them (along with a few other old coins also). At that time I was not a coin collector but only collecting stamps. I started serious collection only from May 2012.
An 1872 indian head cent, in a bad shape. And I got it in Canada... A customer paid her groceries with that (not only with that of course lolllllll), I was the cashier...

In my country we now pay with euros but a few weeks ago in the Czech republic I got an old Dutch coin from 1929, It's not very similair to any Czech coin. So how they gave it to me it's a mystery.

A 1900 Indian head cent- in rough shape. I found it in a roll of cents from the bank, so not technically in my change, but it was still in circulation.

You know, when I came up with this idea for a topic, I meant coins you have found IN YOUR CHANGE, not what you've bought, inherited or found in your house.
Hi Everyone - the two occasions I recall getting old coins back as change would be 3 Canadian dimes back from walmart 1940, 1942, 1965, and my girlfriend got back a 1920 penny from Tim Horton's
OK people, clarification, when you go shopping, sometimes you spend cash in the form of Banknotes and coins apart from bank cards. We want to know the oldest coin that you got back from shoping, as part of your change. And please clarify if it was in your change.
Ok the oldest Australian coin I got back is a 1946 Florin as a 20 cent coin. And the oldest foreign coin was a 1951 New Zealand Florin, also as a 20 cent coin, Kiwi coins are pretty common in Oz.
I received 1943 silver "war nickels" for change, twice in the past year. I see wheat pennies a few times a year, mostly 1940s. The oldest foreign coin in my change was a Canadian cent from 1963.
New Zealand sadly at the moment has no coins before 1990 in circulation for $1 and $2 and just 2006 for the 3 lower coins.
However before then I did find a 1942 silver shilling in change in 2005. In that year and 2006 I worked in a variety store and people always paid with stacks of coins and thus I could pick over the coins for anything interesting, many cupronickel 6d, 1/- and 2/- came out, but all 1947 or later and the 1942 coin was a one off. It was really worn (Good). Australian 5c, 10c and 20c were commonly found too.
Sep 2006 they changed the cents coins to stainless steel and shrunk them, so all these noodling opportunities disappeared.
I love coins. Especially silver, gold and anything really old.

It is an 1899 florin, found in my change in February 1976. Florins still circulated alongside the 10 pence until long after decimalisation in the UK, but most of them were dated 1947 or later. The coin isn't in great condition, but it was an exciting find for a young teenager!
Quote: "Haseeb78"In 1987, I got Pakistan KM#7 Rupee 1948 as change.
That would have been pretty strange to get that in your change, Haseeb, considering the 1948 & 1949 1 Rupee coins are pretty thick coins, unlike the 1 Rupee coins of the 1970's & 1980's, which are pretty thin coins.
Found in 2016 a 20-cent coin from Switzerland dated 1931 in pretty nice condition, and few weeks after , a 25-francs in Cameroon struck in 1958, totally worn. In this country, 100-franc coins from 1971/1975 are still very common.
I was given an 1882 Swiss 10 Centimes in my change when I was there in the 2000s. Incredibly the same design for this coin has been used there from 1879 to date and the older ones still occasionally turn up. https://printsbery.com/invitations/pre-wedding/engagement-party
Unfortunately, in the Philippines, the oldest legal-tender coins in circulation would be from 1995 (for now...). Any coin older than that is demonetized.

I don't really keep track of my change when I go to New York, however the oldest coin I got locally was 20 cents from 1975. Not much older than that, since the current designs of coins in Hong Kong all emerged around the late 70s-early 80s.

1937 D I got last week is the oldest this year. This year have gotten 3 silver coins, one free. A US dime and war nickel. And a Canadian dime 1963. The Canadian dime came out of a penny tray, I saw there was some Canadian coins in the tray. And asked if I can have them. He said help yourself. So I took it.
The oldest I got in change was a 1937 quarter a couple years ago at a convenience store after buying some mints. I even got a 1947 quarter in the same transaction. Total kid in a candy store kinda moment haha
