My son is currently in Brazil, but has no idea where he can buy either this year's or last year's mint sets of coins (i.e. post office, bank, etc.). Can anyone help?

Now you got me.
Don't know if they are still making sets.
And during the last coin fair I went, I've heard that they still haven't released 2025 coins of some denominations. At least until december when the fair took place.
Looking at the numista entries of the current coins, it looks like the last set released was from 2021.
I've found it on the store site of the Central Bank (their coin and medal store is a separated site called Clube da Medalha), but it is sold out there.
By the way, in what part of Brazil he's at?
That's great.
He can go to the coin shops at the 24 de Maio street, close to the República subway.
It's a building at the number 247 of the street, various shops in there (and also the head office of the national numismatic society).
And there will be a coin fair in São Paulo at the end of the month, at days 27 and 28.
The place isn't informed yet, the page is not updated: https://snb.org.br/calendario/encontros-especiais/
(only their calendar page got updated)
You're welcome.
I've been in that building twice.
I don't live in São Paulo, I live in the shore. And here only common coins are available for sale. For more uncommon things I have to go to São Paulo, between here and the southernmost part of the city (Jabaquara) it's just one hour by road.
So I normally only go there when there's a fair. And thankfully these fairs are near the subway, the traffic in São Paulo is very infamous.
The place of the next fair is unnanounced, but if it's in the same place of the previous ones, then it will be in a hotel near the São Joaquim subway. The station after it (going northwards) is Liberdade, which is the famous japanese district.
The fairs at march, june and september are minor ones, the biggest one is at december, which is always in a hotel in the República region, not far from the República and Anhangabaú stations.
I believe my son has been to the Japanese district when he was in São Paulo last year. He brought us back a small Japanese bowl…
Just a thing |I've remembered now, if you're after AU coins: There's a good probability of getting newer coins in the subway's ticket offices.
Don't guarantee he will get 2025 coins in change, but 2024 coins I think that it will be very likely.
Various coins that I have posted in the “have you found 20XX coins in circulation” I've got from there, either at the Jabaquara station (which is connected to the bus station of the same name, where the buses from the shore arrive and go) or at the stations in the central area.
Hey @LDC63 , is your son still in São Paulo?
I contacted the numismatic society since their special encounter page is still outdated. They were quick to answer, and said that the encounter/fair at the end of the month will be at the same place again.
So, while their folder is outdated (https://snb.org.br/calendario/encontros-especiais/), since the place is the same the address on the folder is still valid.
Used time zone is UTC+2:00.
Current time is 05:18.
