Ireland 1/2 penny 1805: measured weights versus catalog weight

I recently measured the weight of the two examples I own of this coin:

N#8347

Both the SCWC and Numista give the same weight and diameter for this coin: 7.64 grams and 27.6 mm.

My measurements were: coin #1: condition F; weight 8.093 grams; diameter 27.94 mm and coin #2: condition VF; weight 8.659 grams; diameter 27.99 mm.

My measured diameters are just a bit larger than the catalog value, but the weights measured for both coins (even for the lower grade/more worn coin) are significantly higher than the catalog value.

I did notice that the SCWC lists eight (!) different varieties for this coin, but only gives one weight and diameter value. Those values are listed only for the first type of the KM# 147.1 variety of this coin.

Both of my coins are the KM# 147.1 variety with the engrailed edge.

I am wondering if some of the other listed types of this coin in the SCWC possibly had higher weights (or if the SCWC listed weight isn't accurate).

Does anyone else have measured weights for their examples of this coin?

NGC as well, but they probably took the SCWC values…..

Here another site seemingly with all the variants?

First, thanks for noticing and reporting this!

I think some of these are duplicates, but I've seen enough (last 2 years on acsearch) to agree with the conclusion we need to change it:

8.58 grams  https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=15573161

8.55 grams  https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=13975286

8.68 grams  https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=13390379

8.68 grams  https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=12811702

8.54 grams  https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=12811702

8.55 grams  https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=12392194

8.73 grams  https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=9700678

There are many more measured weights if you search far enough, the lowest around 8.25 grams.  Everone who cites a size calls it as 28 mm.

I say we call it 8.6 grams and 28 mm and add a Comment.

Edit:  Now done.

Hello!

I have added new better images made by me. Please check.

Beautiful pictures!

My two examples of this coin are more worn/circulated, but that gives them “character” - right?

Lovely photos! Can also confirm the weights being out, even my very worn example weighs in at about ~7.96g.
