Need help identifying this holed coin [solved]

5 posts • viewed 69 times

Hi,

I'm new to this forum and have a coin that I would like to identify accurately (see attached images).

I believe that its an English 1 Groat but do not know when it was minted and in circulation. So little of the lettering on the outer edge remains that it is difficult to decipher what it said. Also, the hole does not help working out the stamping details.

Any information on the coin minting and circulation dates would be great as would any ideas about why the coin is holed?

Many thanks in advance. Harvesters23

The second picture has LON DON on the left, so is London Mint.

 Similar, and also holed

England, King Henry VII (1485-1509), Groat, first period,

London mint, class I, mintmark lis on rose dimidiated (1485-87).

Obverse inscription: HENRIC DI GRA REX ANGL Z FRANC

("Henry, by the Grace of God, King of England and France")

Crowned facing bust, mintmark lis on rose dimidiated (1485-87)

Reverse inscription: POSVI DEV A DIVTOR E MEVM ("I have made God my helper")

CIVITAS LONDON on the inner circle "City of London" long cross fourchee, trefoil of pellets in angles.

This coin bears a good portrait but is clipped and pierced as an amulet.

Lastly, that Spink #2193 catalogue gives this

N#423387

Assuming all the above is correct.

Many thanks ZacUK! That's brilliant!  And such a quick reply.

I thought I'd leave it a couple of days before checking back but you replied in a matter of hours, much appreciated!
