Hello All,

I haven’t seen a coin like this :) And extensive searches across Google and numista haven’t found a match. Would appreciate any pointers

weight: 2.76 gms, diameter:  15mm

 First picture similar - N#56946

King standing with trident

Token collector [1600-1899] with some coins

I did consider that. But the iconography is so different. Also the weight of the Kushan coin is almost 2x the weight of this coin.

same coin posted here:

Thanks :) Looks like I ended up buying the coin that you were interested in.

I tried to use Gemini to identify the coin. My prompt was dreadlock Shiva and trishul. It confidently said this was Tanjavur Martha’s and said this is 10.14 in K Ganesh’s catalogue. Unfortunately I don’t have the book or couldnt find it online.

What Gemini said:

1. K. Ganesh, The Coins of the Marathas

This is the standard reference for Maratha coinage. In this catalog, the Thanjavur Maratha copper series is typically cited under the Section 10 (Thanjavur Maratha issues).

Citation Format: K. Ganesh, The Coins of the Marathas, Bangalore, 1993.

Likely Catalog Number: K. Ganesh #10.12 or #10.14 (depending on the exact seated posture and the placement of the Trishu

ujsually a treasure trove of coins like this are in mishner's book on south indian coins, however even I do not have the book :)

Later Madurai Nayaka - Mitchiner 780. Mitchiner's attribution doesn't seem to be correct as he thinks its Rama and Sita…

@Quant-Geek are you saying you have identified the coin?  Can you take a photo of that page with the coin? I’ll use it to add it to numista

While I commend the addition, numista is probably not the site for these types of coins. I would add it in zeno.ru instead where I moderate the South Indian site.

Thank you so much!!!

So it’s interesting you mention Zeno :) I have searched high and low for a register button so that I can then post in the forums. I haven’t found it.  How do I post to Zeno?

Ask charm: oldcharm@yandex.ru

Also one more clarification. This is thanjavur nayak Coin. Right? Since the text says “Like the late Madurai nayak,…” and talks about coins being stuck in Tanjavur

@Quant-Geek  can a few new members be added to zeno.ru which have shown many modifications on numista,  I had sent an email to charm, regards

@Quant-Geek  does michner provide an page for the coins of the following issuers:

- Nayaks of vellore

- nayaks of dharmapuri

- 467671 Tiruchchirappalli

if so, can you please send a scan for each, regards

While Mitchiner is one of the first to document South Indian coins, its not the greatest. So many coins are missing. Furthermore, that is a lot of pages to scan…

Apologies, didn't read that correctly. Yes, it is a Thanjavur Nayaka coin…

Not even close…Its a coin of Venkata II for 804 and 787 is a Maratha coin with only legends…

people say that who does research in the age of ai, however what you get from ai teaches you about how much more training is required for good research.

AI sucks for coin identification! However, I use it to translate foreign papers and give me a summary of it in English…

Another possibility would be the one on the following link.

Attaching the same picture here for ready reference. Again the reverse side is not clear in the first coin of discussion and so should we consider various possible cases?

Looks very similar! Let me get the coin out and compare again
