I have a question about a 3 Cents “Three Cent Nickel”, as this is an odd denomination and name. Is there a coin folder by H.E. Harris & Co. specifically for this coin? Or would you suggest a different company, or just put it in a generic cent book, since it's the same size? Thank you.
I have been collecting coins ever since I was given a Yen as a child. Now I collect world coins, notes, & exonumia, and am interested in trading. I grade my items for swap very conservatively, so I hope you receive better than expected!
The “nickel” is used in the name to distinguish it from the silver 3 cent coin. 5 cent coins up to that time were silver so the term nickel then didn’t mean a 5 cent coin.
It’s a little smaller than a penny (same size as a dime) so they may not work.
The short answer is yes. Whitman used to manufacture specific 3 cent silver and/or 3 cent nickel coin folders. I know of no company currently manufacturing them specifically. In addition Whitman used to manufacture combination 2 Cent and 3 Cent coin folders. There simply was not enough demand for them to warrant continued manufacture of these types. They are still out there available as used examples in various condition but for inflated prices in my opinion. In addition, these folders add no protection in preserving these coins. Key word “archival quality”, implying not intended for preservation and simply for organization and display purposes. You must decide if it is worth the price for your collection and intentions. I have many examples of both 2 cent and 3 cent coins and i decided it was not worth the expense or risk of damage to the coins to me. I find that simply preserving them in 2x2 flips and then storing those flips in 2x2 Intercept Shield storage boxes works for me.
Thank you to everyone who replied. Great information.
