Should I grade my 1974 D Washington quarter?

5 posts • viewed 78 times

I have this 1974 D Washington quarter thats in excellent shape, high relief ls are clean, surface looks great, just one problem, toning on the front bottom, leading to the reverse with a rainbow toning across America.

Will the toning mess up the grade, and do I possibly have something?

Thanks for any replies

Absolutely not. The cost of slabbing and grading will far exceed the additional value you might hope to gain for this example.  What you are describing as toning could be interpreted as environmental damage or a defect by others. Beautiful details but unsightly and distracting spots and defects that jump out at the viewer on the rim as well. Unfortunate, but it takes away from the eye appeal, desirability, and value and at the highest grades they are looking for degrees of perfection that this example unfortunately does not have. Now, if only the obverse was a nice as the reverese you might consider it but the obverse is the thing everybody sees first. Scroll left for estimated values related to grade

Yeah, I wasnt totally sure, just hoping.

Thanks for your reply

Toning can detract from the grade if it impairs the eye appeal. There's positive toning (which can sometimes help the grade), neutral toning (which neither adds or detracts from the grade and negative toning (which can lower the grade).

In my opinion, your coin has neutral toning and I would grade it MS-66.

I agree, its in really decent shape, and I figured ( hoping) that the rainbow toning on the reverse, especially over America, could be something. lol 🤷

And I know its not perfect, but, neither is the PCGS highest 1974 D Washington quarter, at a MS67+.

So anything pretty close to that with a rainbow toning across America, i thought might be a booster when I sold it. 🤷 😅    Thanks for your reply
