I would like to request the creation of the Rhodes Mint as a Byzantine State, in the period between approximately 1230 and 1256, as described in the Catalogue of the Byzantine Coins in the Dumbarton Oaks Collection and in the Whittemore Collection Vol 4 - Part 2 pp. 648-650.

Coin of Leo Gabalas

Uhh… 17 upvotes in less than a day?

For a simple request to add an issuer?

And 4 replies only from brazilian accounts whom all only have one forum post; approving this request?

Did you just ask all of your friends on the website to upvote this?

:)

You can also vote if you feel that the creation of the issuer is well-founded.

In Brazil, there are groups with hundreds of collectors who help each other with numismatic research and even the identification of less common pieces. enumisma shared information about the important research they conducted and the request to add a new issuer. Some members read about it and agreed, hence the many votes. But from what little I understand, it doesn't matter if there are 0 or 1,000 votes; what matters is that the justification for the creation is well-founded, as seems to be the case here.

Ah, that makes sense.

I was simply confused seeing as suggestions don’t often get this many upvotes in such short times.

:)

👍👍👍Apoiado, vamos fazer o Numista mais completo a cada dia!

Thank you for the suggestion.

It's not clear to me whether the best solution is a new sub-issuer under Byzantine States, or to create a new ruler group for the Gabalas family in the Crusader States … Rhodes section where we have all the other late medieval coins of Rhodes.

Essa emissão é anterior à Ordem dos Cavaleiros de Rhodes e à invasão otomana. No catálogo de moedas bizantinas, está descrita em outros emissores

From your link and Wikipedia, the 12th-16th century history goes something like this:

to c. 1200 - Byzantine

1203-1248 - Quasi-independent Lordship of the Gabalas family

1248-1250 - Occupied by Genoa

1250-1305 - Empire of Nicaea

1305-1310 - Genoese

1310-1522 - Knights Hospitaller

1522-Modern Era -  Ottoman

So, yes, it seems Byzantine Section is the correct place.

Muito obrigado

@Zimm @Tmsconst   I've created the sub-issuer Byzantine States > Rhodes, Byzantine Lordship   in response to this request.  If you think it should be handled differently, let me know and I can change it.

Agreed, sounds logical.  That is why we have “byzantine states” … to cover all the ruling variants

Thank you

Thanks.  All the coins I have found in auctions are bronzes of about 1 - 1.5 grams, guessed by some sellers to be tetarterons, which would fit with the 13th c. Byzantine currency, so I've set up this denomination.

A first coin has been submitted so that the issuer will become visible.
