Help wanted with Corinth roman provincial

Hello,

There's this roman provincial that I need some help with a proper ID:

26 mm; 9,66 g.

The photos are not mine, but from a coin seller. He's acquainted with me and asked for my help with this coin he got.

It's clearly from Corinth, the lettering C L I COR is well visible at reverse.

But we are not sure about the emperor depicted. He is thinking about Septimius Severus (that two-pointed beard reminds him a little), but Corinth provincial coinage only goes until Commodus. And I think it may be Marcus Aurelius after doing some search on RPC.

I see on RPC that exact reverse with C L I COR lettering with a person on horseback only have two matches, one from Marcus Aurelius and another from Commodus. The Commodus one is with his young bust, so I can rule that out.

The Marcus Aurelius one is RPC IV 9478: https://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/coins/4/9478 (it's here on Numista but without photos, and the RPC entry only have one specimen with photos).

The reverse matches, but the obverse I think that doesn't match that well. The lettering doesn't seem to match for me.

So, time to ask the experts here on Numista. He agreed to let me post his photos here.

If it's not RIC IV 9478 from Marcus Aurelius, then what is it?

Thanks.

Hello. It's a Septimius Severus. It won't show up in RPC Online as the relevant volume hasn't been completed yet. I don't have any pictures of the exact type but here is one with the same obverse die.

Wait what? An unfinished RPC volume, you say??

Thanks for the portrait ID, we're already halfway to solving the case.

Did a quick search “corinth septimius severus” on acsearch and none with the same reverse appeared.

Did a quick look at Wildwinds, there are a few Septimius Severus coins on Corinth if you search by city. The one you linked is there by the way, same specimen.

None of them matches unfortunately. But I see that on Wildwinds the Corinth coinage goes until Geta/Caracalla.

The seller is happy with the confirmation of the portrait being Septimius Severus. I think he's writing “Corinth - AE 26 - Septimius Severus - Not in RIC” at the holder.

But I would be more happy if there's some entry in other catalogs for this coin. BCD or SNG maybe?

So, any more ideas about the full ID of the coin?

If not, I think I can mark this as solved.
