Bombay 2 Pice 1804 – reverse die without scales: known variety? [solved]

5 posts • viewed 66 times

Hello,

I recently acquired a copper 2 Pice coin of the Bombay Presidency, dated 1804 (AH 1219), which appears to match the general type of 2 Pice - Bombay Presidency – Numista

The obverse shows the East India Company Coat of Arms with two lion supporters, flags, and the date 1804 below — consistent with the standard Soho Mint issue.

However, the reverse is unusual: it bears only the Persian legend? ("Just"?) and the date ١٢١٩ (AH 1219), with NO balanced scales design whatsoever. The lettering appears original and well-struck — this does not look like a case of wear or a die-fill issue. The scales seem to have been absent from the die itself.

I have attached photos of both sides for reference.

My questions:
1. Is this a known variety of the 1804 Bombay 2 Pice without scales on the reverse?
2. Does this correspond to a specific Numista or Pridmore number?
3. Has anyone else encountered this type?

Any help from specialists in British India or Bombay Presidency coinage would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Thank you so much for your detailed and knowledgeable response!

This is exactly the information I was looking for.

Thanks to your help, I now have a much better understanding of this coin.

Welcome to Numista.

ALWAYS give weight and diameter for proper identification.

Because, depending on weight it can also be the Sumatra 4 keping 1804, thick planchet, KM# 266. This coin is not yet in our catalog, hence it's not in the list ZacUK showed. And it's probably this coin since it's about the same weight as the coin you thought it was. Therefore, again, always give weight (and diameter).

Unless a new added coin can have such a low #N number, it actually was in Numista: N#50934
