Gadhaiya Paisa

7 posts
Hi,
I have a couple of Gadhaiya Paisa, more or less stylized including one off-centre strike.
I was looking for information on the net but didn't find much information of interest.
How are they being classified? By the degree of stylizing?
Is the off-centre of any interest?
Here are the pics.

Thanks

Hi,

You have organized them in Perfect way, in Increasing order of abstractism of the King's Face on the obv. And the Rev. is the fire altar.

Gadhiya Paisa (Literally means "Donkey Money"  :` ) Is a Indo-Sassanian styled coinage from  derived from Sassanian coins.

I will try to gather more information from my books later.

Got some More Info,

Coin 1 and 2: <Not in Numista> Chavadas of Gujarat 760-940 A.D -- Indo-Sassanian Coins

Next two coins are Indian coins (No sassian rulers)  from same Gujurat but with obvious influence of Sassanian coinage.

Coin 3: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces38271.html 950-1050 AD

Coin 4: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces38541.html 1050-1300 AD

As we can see the abstractism is increasing with time but the theme of the coin is same.

getting these coins in such great condition is tough. these are hand struck coins. each coin would be a little different from others. mostly billon coins. % of silver varies from sample to sample. off centre strike will not make it an error coin as in the case of machine struck coins.

as Sujit- the walking encyclopaedia on indian coins- rightly said they are indo sassanian or inspired by indo sassanian coinage. let us hope sujit will come out with more info. special thanks to Sujit for the identifications and valuable info on ancient indian coins. he is of great help to indian collectors and collectors  interested in indian coins.

Thanks a lot Sujit for these interesting links.
Fascinating to see how a detailed coin transforms over the centuries to something hardly recognizable as "king's head" and "Altar"

Hi maudry,
Indeed very fascinating and there are lot of open questions that historians are still trying to find answers.
