Can you name all 197 countries in the world? I practiced for about a month to achieve this... let me know what you get. Surely, as world-coin collectors, we will be good at this (unless your mind [and collection] is cluttered with non-countries like Rhodesia, Nagorno-Karabakh, Hong Kong, Curacao, Bermuda...). http://www.sporcle.com/games/g/world
Too many! Sure, there's the Big Three, but then you get Central America up to Panama, and Caribbean islands (which you WON'T find on Numista, as most use the common East Caribbean States Dollar). Europe was actually much easier for me than North America...
When the Falkland's war broke out in '81 the most Brits had no idea where it was. A majority thought it was off the coast of Scotland. Just like St Pierre & Miquelon, if anyone had asked me I would have guessed Indian Ocean. It was only after getting a couple of coins from there that I actually looked it up so I'd know which album to put them in.
That's a large part of the attraction for me, exotic locations and long gone countries. When I was a small child (as opposed to a big child today) I would spend hours playing with an old pre war radio with the colonial missions marked on the dial. Most were still intact and the announcers spoke with cut glass accents or in local languages. I had no clue where most of the stations where but I knew that there were people who looked like me talking to me from far flung outposts of the glorious Empire.
I can also think of several people who would kick your shins if you told them Rhodesia was a non-country. But don't mind me, I still think Jefferson Davis is the President.
Non illegitimis carborundum est. Excellent advice for all coins.

Quote: neilithicAfrica is a real issue because by the time you've finished writing them all down, probably about 2 or 3 of them have changed names and boundaries.
I find it a bit unusual, England, Scotland and Wales are all listed as United Kingdom, it took me a while to figure that one out, Sicily shows as a country in the world map but is counted as part of Italy in the Europe map, Cook Islands didn't show up at all and neither did a lot of the small island nations.
They didn't include French Polynesia, New Caledonia and French Guiana. After a while it was hard to remember which ones I had already taken. I probably wrote Slovenia 7 times
It's really tricky to write "Bosnia and Herzegovina", lol..
Okay, here's my results:
Europe: 47/47, time left 05:36
North America: 23/23, time left 08:40
South America: 12/12, time left 04:30
Oceania: 14/14, time left 01:13 (I got total blank after I pointed out 11/14, and then it took about 2 minutes before I remembered Fiji, and then another minute before I remembered Micronesia )
Africa: 53/54, I forgot about Senegal……
I didn't know some of the countries until I saw them on my Dashboard, then proceeded to Wikipedia for info, and then Google maps and finally documentaries on YouTube. Because I've always been addicted to knowledge. Also, some other countries I already knew, I didn't know where they were; for example, I was incredibly surprised to find that Singapore is a Country/City, and also some tiny Island countries and other really beautiful like the Maldives, and many of the Commonwealth territories around the world.

Difficult really. We just call it Guernsey...but officially it is as you said I suppose.
ooooooooooo... my God!!!! "Democratic " !!!!
damn it...
thanks, friend...
I called to my psychiatrist already :) :) :) :) he said, that I can imagin a big-big happy country "Datolandia" with its own place on the world map... :) :)
The difficulty for me is that I don't know all the English names... but I'll try !

same here.
I tried 100 times Afganistan, but then I discovered that it is AfgHanistan !!!
also - KyrGyzstan
Sao Thome and Principe ( if you use "and", so why "SAO" and Thome" ? lets write " Saint Thomas and Prince"
and many others as well.
its dont give Republic of Congo. You must write " Rep. of the Congo"
finally you spent more time for orthography and their abbreviation queezes than for countries.
133 of 197... I suppose I'll take that, though it could have been a lot better. Europe was easier to remember before Yugoslavia got separated out.

My school made us do that a couple of years ago. This is why I can easily recite the list of 197-2 countries and point them out on a map. (-2 since 2 of the countries in the quiz are non-UN member states)

I try that countries quiz and I always miss out one or two. I know all the countries, but try to do them in order. Also the 20 minute limit is too short for us slow typists.
Plus some of those countries are more likely overseas territories and sub countries like the Cook Islands, Antigua etc.
Ones I always forget
Iceland
Djibouti
St Lucia or any other tiny St Island in the Caribbean
Tristan Da Cunha or St. Helena
Ones that hard to spell like Kyrgyzstan and some other stans.
Arab mini countries like Qatar, Bahrain
Island nations like Comoros, Seychelles, Sao Tome etc.
I love coins. Especially silver, gold and anything really old.

My new favourites were timegusser in which you have to locate and date 5 random photos a day, some are real easy and some are hard as.
A good hint is you must know the history of cars and women's fashion evolving since 1900 and also some photos have clues. You are scored out of 5,000 for how close you are for both year and place.
Sometimes you can get it wrong with place as some American streets in the past looked similar to British ones, but signs in cents and American spellings give it away. Many Scandinavian photos they show, are usually midsummer ones and thus the sun is quite high and its leafy - but easy for you to guess somewhetre further south.
One of the hardest showed a man in a 60s style suit looking at a church bell and I was going to say Germany 1960 until I noticed the man looked like Emmanuel Macron and then noticed on the bell above him - MMXXV (2025) and that it must be him in the restorated belfry of Notre Dame, I clicked on Notre Dame and got 4998 as I was “87.4m away from the actual site" it seems Notre Dame is a long church and I was down the wrong end!! But I got the perfect 5,000 points for the year - so I got 9,998 out of 10,000 best ever for one photo.
