Just a bit of fun really. I exported my collection to excel from the beginning and each time I update on-line I update that also so they run parallel. I was curious how many coins I owned from the year I was born (1976) so searched the year column on excel for this year and it came back with 45 cells - 45 coins.
Was just wondering how many coins other people own from their own birth year?
Why bother replying on this forum then? The idea was to find out how many coins people have from their birth year, not who doesn't collect modern coins....simple.
every one collects differently. Me i collect modern coins. to me they are not worthless junk.
Hey when i run the advanced search i get everything that has a coin made in 1962 Even if i dont have. It will put up the whole series. if i have a 1961 but not a 1962. I will have to play some more.
I have more than 300 coin types that were also minted during my year of birth in the late 1970's. Maybe 25 coins or so I actually own with the exact year.
Quote: numismaticroyI found the most accurate way to obtain the information was to save my collection to Excel and then do a "find all"
Exactly what I did Roy, yes the advanced search didn't work in this sense. Think I will also try and collect more from my Birth Year, see if I can get to 100
Quote: "adithyasrao"while using advance search it says i have 54 different coins of my birth year.but i am sure i don't have 54 different coins of my birth year.
Using advanced search isn't correct, that's why you find more coins than you really have.
When you choose a year in "advanced search" together with "in your collection", then you get all the types of coins you have where your birth year is a part of but that doesn't mean you always have your birth year.
So it's better to use one of the excel files (collection or swap) and there use search, then you know exactly how many coins you have from your birth day.
What is the best way to find the answer?
• Like someone said, the advanced search doesn't work, since it shows all coins that's been minted dring this year (even though you don't have it, like 1970-2005).
• I tried to search in my excel file, but it didn't say how many hits it got, even though i pressed "find all". Is this due to my settings?
I keep the excel spreadsheet running parallel to the Numista database so both are always up to date. All I did was to highlight the Year column on the spreadsheet, then hit Find, typed in 1976 and clicked Find All, came back with 63 cells found.
Not sure why your's wouldn't have worked, I don't know of a setting which would affect the find option, other than tick boxes for "match case" and "match entire cell contents" and the Look In: maybe it's set to comments?
I have no clue!
I did get it in my Word document (where I first started to track my collection before I changed to Excel). This is not as updated as my Excel file, but then I got 62 coins. Some are ×2 or higher, but without the doubles it's 62 coins.

The amount of hits should be at the bottom of your search box:
67
As it is easier to use my own database, it states that I have 67 coins from my birth year.
As I only collect by type and not date, this must be a low total

Oh, my search box doesn't look like that at all. Is that in Excel?
Quite a lot as 1976 was well into the base metal coin era.
The most important is this Proof set of my Home country
Its in better condition than me after nearly 43 years!
I love coins. Especially silver, gold and anything really old.

It looks like there are 7 photo-worthy coins from my birth year.
I don't need to look at Numista to get this number -- normally, the first four digits in the photo filename is the date, and there is a combined directory of symbolic links to all the photos.
Between 1 and 2 percent of my collection. But the question is quite difficult, because Excel file mixes years of different calendars; the site search counts coins by type; and dates of some calendars do not match Gregorian dates exactly.
I am focusing on making a complete global set of my 1969 birth year (circulation coins only, hopefully XF or better, no FAO or commemoratives), so my number is high. Through the two databases online, I count 370 coins possible. I have 334 now which includes 13 I'd like to upgrade, and there are 2 on the way from eBay. And probably going to bid on one today!
I have a spare set of 1969 coins in BU condition if you want including a nice Cook $1
I feel sorry for anyone born before 1967 or so, when many countries were still issuing silver circulation coins.
Even more for those born before 1947 when most of British Commonwealth dumped silver for Cupronickel.

I did advanced Search and found 36 pages of 20 coins plus a page with five. That would make it 725 coins. The problem is that in those pages there are multiple coins of the same kind and year, just different condition, and I am not feeling like checking every entry. That makes 725 coins a minimum.

Most of the coins minted post 1930s aren't worth too much more than their melt value so it's not too bad.
The other difference is also that there were far fewer coin types minted in earlier years than there have been in the last 20-30 years, so it probably all balances out.
