"Copy" Coin [solved]

7 posts
My wife's grandfather found this coin in his back yard probably 25 or 30 years ago.  Her family asked me if I could help identify it.  It looks like there are some Greek letters on it, maybe.  I looked through all of the Ancient Greece coins and some of the Ancient Rome, but didn't see anything like this.  It's really worn looking with maybe a whole horse on one side and maybe half a horse on the other side.  Also, it has the word "Copy" stamped on the side with the whole horse.  Obviously, I know it's not a real coin, but I'd still appreciate any help in learning more about it.

Diameter is 23.5mm, thickness is 2mm.  It looks silver, but doesn't feel heavy enough (I don't have a scale).

Thanks in advance!

Hmmm, very interesting.  Thanks for the information!  I knew it was fake because of the word copy on the back, but I never imagined it would be anything like that.  It would be interesting to find out how it ended up in their back yard, but that's probably a story I will never know  :(

Thanks again!
I just spent some time researching it based off what you sent me, and what I found was actually really interesting.  Even fake coins can have a good story!
Very strage indeed. Here is one my freind found 15 years ago. And wanted some information on.

She gave it to me aweek ago.And i did not have time to look for information yet. She found in her small home town here. But thank you you all for helping me out.

It is, what it is, or is it.

I have the coin with a full horse & the letters copy3 on the back, what is it,& is it worth anything

Most likely, these copies of ancient coins were part of some loyalty program, like in pack of breakfast cereals, or with gasoline or tobacco products.

This post is about similar copies of ancient coins, distributed by BP (British Petroleum) in Europe in the 1970-s:

There is some interest in this kind of tokens, but you need a magnifier and a lot of luck to find someone to pass it on to. It would help if the origin of the token was clear: who issued it? which loyalty program? Without that, it is probably worth little or nothing.
