1661 8 Maravedis

6 posts
I have the coin pictured below and I am quite confident it is a 1661 Maravedis.

The mint mark is proving tough to identify, I am quite confident the lower letter is S which makes this a 1661S 8 Maravedis minted in Segovia, but I cant figure out what the top letter is, it looks like the letter E but I cant confirm this and searching is a blank. possible B?

I have put a sample of the same mint marks I found on a 16 maravedis coin just for comparison as the mint marks seem to be the same.

opinions ??

Values for the 1661S are quite high for this type according to NGC, but as it shows no pic to go with the ID I cant be 100% sure it is this exact combination of mint marks.

The mintmark that looks an E is the Aqueduct of Segovia. What you think is an S, is the value 8.

Here you have an outstanding web about Segovia mint with photos of all the coins minted in this location.

The 8 is on the other side of the coat of arms, if it wasn't a letter S but an 8 then both 8's would be identical in shape.

Every 8 and 16 Maravedis I have come across has two letters, One for mint mark and the initial of Mintmaster.

This image of one is much clearer, you can see the shape of the S is pretty much the same as the one I have.

Your bottom link is to a single image and not a website. The first wiki link will make an interesting read, Thanks for that.

The official mint's initial is only on coins made of silver or gold. Maravedis are lacking of any silver after 1599, pure copper, then they haven't the initial after that date. The first 8 maravedís were struck, I think, in 1602. So most of 8 maravedis have not official's initial.

In 1660-61 were minted two series of maravedis of billon, hammered and milled, in Segovia with the official's initial S.

If you have full photos, please upload them to the catalog. I think I have a worn one, I'll look for it and take photos.

This is the best I can do, I have taken two with a digi scope and the other two using a camera. It has proven difficult to get a clear image of it thanks to the amount of wear it has.

Castles are bottom right and top left in the coat of arms in case you cannot make them out in the images.

The weight is : 1.42gm

If it is a fake then so be it, getting closure on this coin would certainly help put it to rest.
