Didn't know that Lower Canada is really "Bad"
This is a private commercial token. Such tokens were issued in Canada to supplement royal coinage, small denomination of which were insufficient for local commerce.
There were several similar tokens with Montreal and Banque du Peuple inscription with different number of leaves in the wreath. Here is one https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces22494.html
I collect coins and tokens which circulated in Africa from 18th century to 2000. I sell about 7000 illustrated world coins from http://www.avscoins.com.
That is a very nice old Canadian Token. Pee confederation, from the province of Lower Canada.
its in excelent shape for its age. Nice wreath and chornicopia(sp?).
It is a very nice example. My Charlton Catalog has 5 different varieties of this Token ranging in value (VF grade): $15 -$675 cdn.
Some interesting history. There were two armed uprisings between Upper and Lower Canada in 1837. Essentially, a governance dispute between our founding people the French and English. La Banque du Peuple was not officially Chartered as a Bank until 1844 as the bank's directors in 1838 were real or suspected rebels (warrants were issued for their arrest).

Hi Peter. Thank you for that information. The history is fascinating. I got 12 coins in a job lot that included this coin and 4 silver coins for a bargain price. I'm therefore very happy. Many thanks for the assistance and information
