I was recently thinking about how often I talk back and forth with other members on here. I wondered how difficult it would be to introduce a Instant Messaging Program for the Numista Members it would make life easier and help to build friendships between fellow collectors.
There are quite a number of different PHP plugins that integrate a chat system into the forum pages so people can chat while online, but not too sure if it would work here though.
I +1 on this idea.

It's not hard to implement such a feature but as a former forum administrator I am against. All I saw behind this feature is how the durability of data is affected. Just think about how many will start to ask for coins identification on this chat since it's more quick and easy but also how poor the forum will became and how many won't be able to find a thread that might be relevant for a current problem. There are other disadvantages with this feature and the only way I can think this might work is with clear rules about how it should work and with many chat admins to be sure none is taken by the wave.

If an instant messenger system would be too hard to follow up by moderators on the forum, then how about an instant messenger for private chats just for swaps?
Many of us often face the problem that we ask somebody about a swap and never get answers. So how about another option in the list that opens up when clicking on “Start a new swap”: Status (online / offline). Then you can right away chat with a person (which has coins you like) and open a swap if he/she would be interested.
Of course, you should be able to change your online/offline status manually as well if you do not want to receive instant messages even when you are logged in onto the website.
Also this feature would be helpful during ongoing swaps. It is always really annoying when you see that the other person is online in a swap and changes marked coins while you are writing a message about it. With an instant messenger these kinds of issues could be solved much faster.
I think it would be a really nice feature to have a chatroom for every logged in member, except for those banned from the forum. No point in giving another platform to the ICANN secret agent lunatic fringe. For all the decent and sane people it would be a nice way for everyone to get to know one another. Voice chat would be a real bonus feature.
What is important though is to make it opt-in rather than being automatically added when logging in. Sometimes you just have a little time to update your collection but don't want to appear rude. I used to belong to a really nice and friendly family oriented coin forum which did that so eventually I stopped logging in.
Non illegitimis carborundum est. Excellent advice for all coins.
Make Numismatics Great Again!
Fluke and Smetsys are definitely on to something I agree it is a pain when both parties are online and you have to go through the trouble of messaging each other when you could just open up a chat with them. I like the idea of being able to switch yourself to invisible because sometimes when I am entering new coins into my collection I like to focus just on that so that I don't make any mistakes. I am sure that there would be people that would abuse this but isn't that the problem with everything in the world... someone is always there to ruin it for everyone else? I think this would prevent and resolve more problems than it would cause.
So I guess we have the cornerstones of our proposal for an instant messenger:
- a column next to every name of numista members with "green/grey" light (online/offline) in the table when clicking on "start a new swap" BUT possibility for every user to disable "online-status" (if he/she wishes not to be bothered
- possibility of writing instant messages on opened swap pages (not swaps that are turned down!)
So where do we go from here with our proposal? Any referee who can say sth about it? Do we need a vote to get this instant messenger going?! Anything I can do in this regard to support?

I agree and the best way to usually get him to do that is to get more people to like the idea so maybe we can keep this up and eventually get it done.
