Hey there,

It's a tael. However, I think it might be fake. The reverse with the dragons doesn't seem familiar, but the reverse reads "Kuang-hsu 1 Tael"

Okay. Good.

The tael is probably the most faked Chinese silver coin. And that "Taiwanese" tael is certainly fake. Not only did Taiwan not issue any taels, there were no proofs in China during the imperial era.

What I think is:

1) The Taiwan coin is a modern proof bullion coinage, as the Tael still survives as a weight measurement. In China it is still common to buy rice/etc. in Taels/Catties.

2) Somewhere along the lines, some smartass decided to use that design on a counterfeit. I actually spotted an obvious fake once, asked the vendor and he said this is so they can trick people into buying it, w/o being a counterfeit because it is so obviously fake.
