Well I guess the first thing I should ask is, is this even a coin?

The lack of a currency or any writing on the obverse makes me feel like this is a commemorative. It is pretty heavy and so far the only thing I know is that its from China Republic. Any info. would be great, thanks.
Hey,

It's Taiwanese.

First of all, it's a medallion. It says 中国六十年十月三十一日, or "Republic of China 60th year, October 31." Therefore, it was issued 1971. I think it's commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the Foundation of the Rep. of China.

I think it's made of gold. Check if it is.

Thanks. How do I know if its really gold?
Density.

I'm sure it talks about it in the Numisdoc.

At first I honestly thought it was plastic. However, you mentioned it was a little heavy.

Thanks again, looks like I need to get a scale to figure it out.
True.

Even I don't have a scale, but it shouldn't be hard from there.

This came from my parents collection. I asked my mother about it but she doesn't remember if its gold. Maybe my father would know.
Cool.

I'm pretty sure it's gold. Taiwan issued several gold medallions similar to this one.

I'm going to assume its gold too. Its definitely metal and since its from my parents collection when they were still in Taiwan I won't second guess it.

I was thinking of that too. I might be passing by Stacks in NYC, maybe I will ask them.
Chinese text says that it's commemorating Chiang Kai-Shek's birthday.

I don't see it anywhere in the Chinese webs, so it should be a privately minted medallion, not an official coin.

This is the official coin (with currency) minted by the bank.

Yes, it is a medallion.

If you look it up in Krause's "Unusual World Coins" it will most likely be in there.
