Aurora Borealis / Aurora Australis

5 posts
Guys,

you may have noticed that in the last year my collecting has slowed down whilst I learn a new hobby.. photography. And I'm learning to see the world in a new light.

Wednesday night there here was a notification for the northern lights likely to be seen in the northern U.K. So I headed out and managed to get this one which I'm chuffed with for my first aurora shot.

However, since I was on night shift I had to leave at 21:30 to get ready. Soda law proves is self time and again. There are some truly fantastic images at the exact same spot of the sky dancing over the lighthouse.

Anybody else witnessed this phenomenon ?

If if anyone is interested I am on instagram and Flickr of anyone is interested I would love the add to see what images you lot have captured in your locale.

Mark,
I also love photography, but missed the chance to see the Borealis when in Iceland. The guy who was looking after the place we stayed in, said that it was unlikely that we would see it during our stay as none had been predicted.
So, due to an early start the next day for a partial tour of Iceland, we went to bed early.
Next day at breakfast, he told us he had seen it, but did not want to wake us up.
Good excuse to go back again.
Just spend time looking through my other 9,000 photographs on my computer instead.
I'm just a collector of coins, not a slave to it, unless I am in a coin shop.

Very nice pics mark, I was doing the same thing last year until mobility issues got the better of me and I had to hang up the towel with it.

Keep it up, the shots really are rewarding.

Hi Mark,
Mid January my wife and I went to Tromsø with the purpose of seeing the northern lights. We booked a Northern Lights Chasing tour for two nights in a row, and on the second night we witnessed the most beautiful Northern Lights displays, over two fairly long periods. Breathtaking. Chances of seeing the lights as high north as Tromsø are much larger than in the UK. If your really want to have your chances seeing it, and you don't mind spending a few dollars/pound/euros on it, then Tromsø is the place to go.

Photographing the lights is another thing. Although my wife has a sophisticated Canon EOS D70 with above average peripherals, her pictures weren't half as nice as the pictures made by the tour staff. For night photography, you need highly sensitive lenses, and these do not come for a bargain.

Thanks guys I do find it quite therapeutic. I used to have multilple hobbies before the arthritis ruined most of them now I have a few again but they're totally different too my previous.

My wife wants to visit Iceland as she's got a Geography degree Iceland is very interesting too her other than just the northern lights so although I've head from others tromso is great Iceland will be the likely destination. I do have a Nikon whilst not a top range DSLR it's a good mid level. I've amassed a few Lenses now though including a wide angle f3.5 which generally isn't considered fast but it's good enough for he northern lights :)
