Strange marking on Spanish 5 Peseta

Have you ever seen something like this? (I have drawn a red eliipse around the area in question)

It looks like some mirrored text stamped on to the coin, before the actual design was overlaid?

Matt
Just checked my 5 Ptas coins...no sign of what you have got. That was a good find. Is it the mirrored obverse text? The O of Franco?

Matt, you've found a die clash error.  The dies struck together without a planchet between them, transferring part of the image from the obverse to the reverse die, then onto any coins minted after the die clash.  If you check the obverse of your coin, you may find a similar mirror impression of the reverse.  I've lined up a mirror image of the obverse of the coin over your image showing other letters outside of the ellipse.

bam777 is correct, you can see the O of Franco within the ellipse, as well as CAUD from Caudillo.

David
I hadn't looked at the obverse long enough to read Caudillo, but knew that it was a die error of some sort. Well done, Montana.

Now Matt, we need everyone to look at their 1968 5 PTAS coin and see if they have that error and find out just how rare yours is?

I had a UK half-penny with the same error - reversed lettering of another half-penny - on (from which I did some investigating, and learnt the term 'brockage' for such errors). Will look at my 1968 5 Pesetas later.

Okay, thanks for the information. Looks like there's a little on the other side also. I shant give up my day job and retire on the proceeds just yet. And truth be known if I hadn't been peering at the date in the star I shouldn't have even seen the error (must go to Specsavers <g>)

You need more than spectacles to read some of those bloody mintage dates in the stars! Depending on the particular grade you almost need a microscope on some. I was going through a bulk lot recently and even with my glasses and a magnifying glass I was still struggling with a few of them - all that effort for a load of low-value shrapnel!
Just because you can't see it ... doesn't mean it isn't there - Anon.

Okay, so having established that there was a die error, caused by the dies striking each other without a coin blank (planchet) between them, one can assume that a number of these coins were made, which begs the question are these then a "variety" ? And should they be added to the catalogue as a known variety?

Matt
I think it should be added as a variety but if thier is no evidence for any more then it should be stated as far as can be told only one known in excistance. This should encourage others to check theirs, when i get home from the libary im checking mine.
