Can someone please tell me what happened to the coin on the left and wheather I should clean it or leave it alone, I live in India near the sea and the air is humid
There's nothing wrong with the handling of the coin,

But sadly, it's a fake. The one on the right is a real coin, but the coin on the left looks like it was made of tin. Notice the bubbles on the obverse surface. That doesn't happen on ordinary silver coins.

How should i check the material? It belonged to my grand-father...
Am i right in asumeing that its a fake made during the 40's to be passed of as legal tender ?
I don't know if I can agree on it being fake, just based on the image.  Have you tried comparing the weight of the two coins?
I have found coins with this kind of tarnish, more than once, and I can't tell if those are bubbles or dents.

I'm not saying that Smartone is wrong, I just don't see anything that points to a fake.

As for cleaning, I think you'll find that it is easier said than done, but you can try.

I agree with smart one when he says its fake those to me look like bubbles and not dents also the corrosin is not very black looking which is what i would expect from a silver coin.
you can determine if something contains silver easily .. but it may gross you out.

The only thing you need is a piece of tin foil (silver cooking foil). Get the item that you think is silver and place it on the tin foil. Now, SPIT on the item, this will not harm the item at all.
cover the item tightly with the foil after you have spat on it. Leave it for 5-10 seconds, then open the foil. Bring it up to your nose and smell it as you open it. If it smells like rotten eggs then it's silver.
You will notice straight away as the smell is unmistakable and strong.
Try this with something that you know is silver so that you can see it works.

Just found this on google havent tried it yet but i think im gunna have to give it a go
The things we learn on Numista.....
Ok, I've got more evidence to prove it's fake.

Sorry to disappoint, dsouzarf. But look at the edges. It's all beat up, like lead or tin. Silver, when used over time, is smoothened and flattened. Weaker metals like tin or lead usually have fine details, like your coin, but are very damaged on the image, text, and edges.

The one on the right looks real though.
