Where to start?!?

So im a new collector and i was just curious where you guys think the best place to start is
i am open to any suggestions
It just depends on your collection. Naturally, you have quite a few American coins...so you could start by collecting just American coins. There is another thread somewhere on the forum that can help on this "specialising" (enter thread in post below ZacUK (with hope)).

So you could collect a particular date, of each coin, maybe set yourself date parameters etc.

Anyway welcome to the site and always feel free to ask for help on the forum or by PM (Private Message).

Also agree with date collecting i.e. year you were born - try to collect every coin from across the world with that date (excluding silver and gold). My themes are errors and what I think are beautiful. Others collect birds, animals, flowers, sea (boats, fish, lighthouse etc) - see link below.
For example I made a list quite a while ago for someone who wanted to know how many 1979 coins there were, and excluding 39 valuable ones there were 603 altogether. Approximately.
Simlarly for the year 1956 there were about 337 coins. Takes ages to make a list like that, and seems the further back the less coins per year. I guess.

Boom...just like that; you've done me proud.
What were your reasons for starting to collect in the first place? as this could show you the path to take.

Also do you have any other hobbies or interests which might be relevant?
ive always had an intrest in collecting things when i was little i collected rocks from each place we went and wrote dates and locations on them and then came home and put them in order. When my estranged father died about ten years ago i picked up his small collection ( he was in the army ) and it perked my interest ..only have about 50 coins so im pretty new at this. Im trying to get one denomination from every country but i know that will be a never ending quest. Im really into war time things i just like the idea that something im touching was maybe in the pocket of a solider when he was killed or when he had a joyous return home so maybe WW2 era would be a good place to go....so many options!

I would urge you to consider the Vichy France issues as a great starting point. They are widely available and look good especially in grades above VF. Also there is no real obstacle to being able to complete the set - e.g. no really rare coins or obscure varieties. US Jefferson nickels are a good starting point too, you don't run into the wall of expense you would find with dimes and quarters once you get to the pre 1965 silver issues.

A little more ambitious would be Indian Head Cents which do have a couple of expensive dates or US large cents which can be found for around $10 - $15 each. Argentina, Switzerland and Panama have produced some beautiful coins too. More recently, several of the Caribbean islands have some very nice series which are affordable as long as you stay away from the contrived commemoratives. Jamaica is a good example, nice modern coins easy to pick up in UNC grades (for me at least, I live in Florida) and you can work backwards through to the 19th century with a lot of nice George V and Edward VII issues.

I collect several series from a range of countries but my favorite is UK issues from 1837 - 1967. I'm doing ok with copper and bronze, less so with silver but the coins are wonderful. It's very unlikely I will ever complete the collection but it's my first and most enduring passion.

Drop me a line anytime!
Non illegitimis carborundum est.  Excellent advice for all coins.
