Soft clean before putting in coin holders

8 posts
Hey,

i'll start putting my whole collection in self-adhesive coin holders.
Is it a good idea to clean them before ?
I would use soft cleaning techniques :
- water with soap
- alcohol / aceton

Or should i leave the coins as they are ?
Hi
There are two ways of cleaning :
1 : gently removing dirt from the coin (like you want to do)
2 : trying to make the coin shiny like new again

I believe that no-one can be against the first way. A coin should be clean before putting it in a holder.
The second one is just NOT DONE !
Hope to have helped.

Tony,

indeed it's only the first one i like to do.
What is the best method  (i don't want to remove the patina) ?

Geert
Geert,
een beetje dreft kan al veel oplossen, in sommige gevallen nagellakremover
met een zachte tandenborstel maak j ook geen schade
vooral goed drogen na het wassen (haardroger)
eventueel nog opwrijven met wat naaimachineolie

You must remember coins metals and alloy compositions differ a lot from one coin to another their are other threads on numista that deal with cleaning coins you should read them before going ahead with cleaning your collection. what cleans one coin can destroy another so any method you choose to use should be tested on a worthless coin of the same metal or alloy type as the on you want to clean.

To clean surface dirt and grim, I use a DAWN dish liquid ... the particular one that is clear like water (NOT the colored ones). This is the same DAWN dish liquid that is used to clean oil from sea birds in distress. It is very gentle and does a great job of removing dirt from the surface of the coin without leaving the coin shiney. It does not change the natural toning of the coin. It is certainly worth a try. In Canada, I purchase it at Walmart. You can probably get it at Walmart in the United States. I do not know if it is available in other countries.
Do you have any pictures of the coins you are intending on cleaning? it would be interesting to see other peoples opinions on weather or not they need cleaning and then if you do go ahead and clean them how they look afterwords.
This is what I do.

Just in case a coin purist audits my coins, I simply wash my coins in warm water and gently rub them on a towel. This ensures that the coins are not damaged or "cleaned" but simply removed from dirt.

Don't ever clean proof coins, by the way.
