If precious, consult a professional. If regular, like common or circ. commem. coins, I tend to put them in plastic bowls with warm water and soak them for a while. If the dirt adds numismatic value, simply do not clean.

I don't think dirt ever actually adds numismatic value; just so we're clear, "dirt" here refers to stuff you cana actually scrape off a coin.

Unless there's actual detritus on the coin's surfaces, my recommendation is not to clean it.

Finally, I recommend turning off Caps Lock :)

Isopropyl alcohol will remove dirt and grease without affecting the toning. I wouldn't use it of proofs, but giving a circulation coin a soak in alcohol for a few minutes and then wipe it clean with a car polishing cloth or some other cloth that won't scratch the coin is perfectly fine in my book.
What? Me Worry
