French Circulating Euro Coins

4 posts
Hello All - In Reviewing my French coins for missing issues against the Numista data base, I noticed that there are quite a few French 10 Euro coins which are listed as "circulating commemoratives" that are silver coins. My question is this. Are there truly issued for circulation silver coins in 2011 (ex. KM1728)? In this date and time, I would believe that these coins are issued for collectors only, at a premium, and never issued into the circulation coin stream. Any comments?
In searching for a definitive answer I found this old Numista thread:

The 'all Euro denominations above 2€ are only legal tender in their country of issue and are very rarely seen in circulation' seems to be the right answer although I still have doubts as to whether they really do circulate. (If they do, I have not ever had the good fortune to get one at face value in change). If I had my way I would put those coins as 'non-circulating'.

'Legal tender' and 'circulating' are two different terms.
Thanks for putting me in touch with this subject which has been kicked around to death. I should have researched this before resurrecting this issue again. I guess it is what it is. I'll just decide for myself the status of these coins, opting for non-circulating commemoratives in my own mind. I would like to be in the post office which handed them out as change!

French 10€ commemoratives are not minted for general circulation and you are very, very unlikely to find them in your change. Also, though they are technically legal tender, there are some shops that won't take them. At the time of their distribution, though, you can "buy" them at post offices for face value.
It's kind of a greyish area as you don't have to order them from the mint, but I agree with your assessment that they are non-circulating commemoratives.
