Do people not know how an offer is supposed to work?

I've been watching quite a few auctions on the NZ version of E-bay (Treademe) that are desirable but overpriced. They've reached the end unsold, I've requested an offer, and when the offer has come through it's been for the price that the coins were originally listed for.

I didn't want the coin for that price, nobody wanted the coin for that price. That's the reason the coin didn't sell, it means your coin was priced to high. If you get asked for an offer then you should offer it for a lower price.

I have sometimes offered 10% below the price just because I thought the shipping was excessive. 10% -- and I was ignored. If you're not willing to accept a 10% discount, then, puhleeze, don't say "or best offer" on your frigging eBay listing.

Usually when I see "or best offer" on a moderately expensive coin I take a chance and offer as much as 30% below the given price; the way I see it, if they accept I get a good deal and if not- oh well, it was just a bit too expensive for me anyway. No sale.

In my experience 90% of the time they take me up on the offer. Just pulled that move off on a very nice crownsize silver coin! :wiz:
This is why I sort by "Auction Only" when I use Ebay.

I list a fair amount of items as best offer myself. Usually its because Im ok accepting a bit less than the listed price but happy to take the listed price as well. I always base what I list on recently sold items so I know where the ballpark is. I have rejected some absurd offers but generally am happy to negotiate a bit on a fair price.

On the buying end, I will make an offer when I think the item is close to or fairly priced. If there is too big a discrepancy it wont be worth my time usually.
The Trademe offer system is slightly different.

When an auction finishes without any bids you can request that the seller gives you a fixed price offer. Most sellers offer it for their start price that nobody wanted in the first place.

I so agree, most of the bulk lots you find on TradeMe are way too expensive, like 800 grams going for $30! (NZD) It's insane! There weren't even any good coins anyway in that lot.

Yes, I do that with sellers, especially when they tend to sell at or slightly above catalogue value. Most of the time they accept the offer, or else they make a counter offer.

I purchased a very rare Hudson's Bay Company token (probably less than ten in existence) after accepting the second of two counter offers.
