Coin Storage

8 posts
Hi,

I was just wondering how everyone stores their coins? Do you use cardboard 2x2 holders or do you put them straight into an album. I have bought a couple cheap 'world coin stock' albums off eBay for my less valuable stuff, would it do them any damage?

Thanks in advance!

The cheap stuff generally contain PVC that can harm the coins. Make sure they are coin safe materials. Personally I use either 2x2 mylar flips or the 2 pocket non pvc plastic flips.
I sell my Duplicate or Un-Needed coins on eBay: https://www.ebay.com/str/coinsandmorenj.
I'd already bought a couple hundred of the cheap flips that probably contain PVC before I learned about the dangers of those, so I've been switching over to mylar for the past year or so. The only coins still in the old holders in my collection are low value coins, e.g. US pennies, Russian kopecks, etc.

Oklahoman on the other thread like this one brought up some paper envelope alternatives, which I've also tried but found personally unsatisfactory. As for cardboard 2x2s, I absolutely hate them and make a point to break any coins in 2x2s I buy out ASAP. If you have a stack of them you'd better make sure the staples don't get anywhere, because that's a guaranteed tear if you store them adjacent to each other. And even the ones that don't need staples, it's a hassle to actually access the coin.... I mean, some might disagree but if I can't feel my collection what's the point?
I have always been using mylar :)
Yeah i have bought some 2x2 flips - they are mylar and are adhesive so i do not need staples. With the albums i bought i asked the seller who told me the plastic was 'OPP', does anyone know if that is good or bad?

I completely understand where you're coming from - i keep my silver crowns and Morgan dollars in plastic capsules so i can get them out sometimes.
Your oriented polypropylene (OPP) foils are fine they should do no harm to your collection.
