Free discussion......Chitchat about anything..!!!!!!! NOT just damn Coins  !!!!

Most of the topics in this section of the forum belong into other parts of the Forum.

Do any of you have anything to say about other things than coins ? Used to, back in the day, this was a pretty lively part of the forum...…..it's kind of a drag now, dominated by a few and pretty much always about the same stuff.....

You coin nerds (me included) ever talk about stuff like Movies, Cars, Motorcycles, Pets, Sports, Food from around the world, Beer, Whiskey, Guns, Vacations, Kids, Work, Countries, History, Tools etc etc
Well, I love to talk about politics and how the world regime sucks for the most part, but I understand to stay away from that.....

Maybe all of you are afraid of the mighty moderators or being so damn PC all the time that it hurts. Maybe you talk on other forums about all that.....I doubt it, from what I read here.

I'm just saying, we have members from all over the world here. How about a little bit of what's going on in your country ……..

As for me and the good old southern USA...…..it's been raining here for damn ever, everyday in May. I saw Noah the other day and he is about finished with Ark #2.
LaBron and the Cavs lost game one of the NBA finals, looks like Golden State will win it 5 games.
I just finished my fishing deck at my place on Lake Norman, going for Catfish this weekend, they bite the best on beef livers.
Buddy of mine got me a nice bottle of Jack Daniels Sinatra Select, that I will be sipping on while I'm fishing.
Might make it to an auction, I'm looking for a new lawnmower, hopefully I can get a deal on a nice big old zero turn.....love the way they mow.....wide open, full speed ahead.

You all have fun waiting on the mailman for that 1850 coin from ????????

Cheers...…….
Maybe there should be two "free discussion" forums, one for talking-about-coins-other-than "questions" and "identify this", (which are the total of "other parts of the forums" about coins), and another for topics-other-than-numismatics.

I have used the "free discussion" forum for the former, and generally decline to participate in the latter.

I have been posting in internet forums for neigh on 25 years young feller, and I don't care to chat about sports, nor guns, nor the weather, nor politics where you live, or your grievances, or where you went on hols, or what type of laundry soap you favor.
Nothing personal, but my wife's friends an my inlaws come over in the afternoons, and I get more than I can take of all that on a daily basis!
Well I do like a drop of whiskey and could probably be lured in to that thread...

So I am going to make a suggestion to the owners that they create a new talk-about-coins-other-than-the-only two-rubrics-about-coins-on this-forum, and leave this one, to compete with Facebook and Twitter to you.

Yeah -- I'd think a separate "off topic" discussion section would be better, if people are going to start posting lots of non-coin stuff.

Maybe you could head over to the French side -- my knowledge of French is abysmal, but it looks like there's a lot of true off-topic threads in the "salon" section. You could always use Google translate to convert your posts into French :)

Anyway, the big event going on around here is the (expensive) heat pump replacement. I wonder if anyone on this forum really cares about stuff like this.

I do too, but suffice it that alternate "facts", historical revisionism and conspiracy theories have no place here; we should not grant intellectual equivalancy to charlatans promoting their "creative intepretations" or "Lost Causes", and we've certainly had some of that here in the past. As for PC, it seems to be raised as a problem depending on whose ox is being gored.

I don't see why anyone would have an issue if someone started a topic about movies, or food, or cars, or sports, or vacations, or kids, though. You'd have to be quite disagreeable to make a scene on a thread like that... In fact, someone should resurrect the "coins seen in movies" thread or start a new topic about film noir.

@phfoticus On the French Free Discussion forum there's an annual meme thread... somehow I don't feel they would be as at home among the EN side's older readership. :O

I’m down for some free discussion!

JR Smith blew the end of that game! Love the look on LeBron’s face when he realized what JR Smith was doing! That being said, it was a lot closer of a game than I thought it would be.

A place with a fishing deck sounds awesome! I need to put up a fence to keep some critters out of my garden and to keep the kids in the back yard when they play, although I suspect that the fence will not work for either of those things!

My recent big non non coin purchase was my new bike that I have been roaming the mountains with:

Speaking of mowing the lawn....i better go mow mine
We definitely don't need two forums, there's nothing wrong with this section having all the coin discussions that don't really fit into "numismatic questions" it is a coin website, if you want to start chats about other things then start them up. I'll start up a couple if you like.

You mention going to an auction to get a lawnmower, I love auctions and there is a good auction house over here, Hayward's Auctions But unfortunately their auctions are on Wednesdays in the middle of the day when I'm at work and I can never get enough time to get in and view things to put in an absentee bid. :(
What? Me Worry
you are right King65 :)
here in Italy the weather forecast is good, we have a new government (as your President, they promise more money for all and fewer immigrants). We will probably continue to stay in the euro but the biggest problem is that the World Football Cup in Russia begins without Italy (coz unqualified) :(
if anyone is interested I can teach cooking "spaghetti alla carbonara" :D
Riky

Thats the latest critter I caught last week......forgot the name of the type of turtle it is, but it had a real soft shell, pretty heavy.

Thats my rig going
To Moab last year. Moab is such a great place. That picture is at a rest stop on Loveland pass, Colorado
Yes the Cave's going to be in trouble I think. Labron was pretty mad, and rightly so.

Neil, auctions are one of the best times. Anybody that has a chance to go really should try it.........the place I go to has everthing you can imagine.....from guns to tools to tractors and paper towels etc etc. Great fun and wonderful bargains

Hey USA didn't qualify either........that's not as much of a tragedy as Italy not making it. Guess I have to root for good old Germany.

love to have you Lela on cooking spaghetti carbonara........all I can do is boil water.
My dear Thomas, much has changed while you have been away. The emergence of a tiny but loud coven of SJW s has driven off most anyone who had anything interesting to say. Until school commences again I'm afraid the diet is going to pretty much posting pictures of coins in date order, recycled Wikipedia paragraphs or "I like round coins, do you like round coins best too?" topics. It's long on volume and virtue signaling but pretty thin on content. There's always been a strong anti-American drift but that too has increased dramatically with a predictable and boring daily dose of insults towards our President. Ironically it invariably stems from those complaining loudly about anyone else making a political remark. If you are going to ask me why this has been allowed, I don't really have an answer for you.

Anything remotely interesting or original was quickly hijacked and turned into a three ring circus if the harpies detected the merest hint of unorthodoxy or something wasn't expressed in the precise, government approved PC language. I guess most of the interesting folks got tired of the constant ill mannered rebukes from these self appointed forum police and the general snide cattiness. The Numista forum has changed from a lively, informative place into a dreary, toxic wasteland. The moderators have adopted a hands off policy which has been exploited by the impolite, the classless and the clueless. I value the Numista forum as a place where I can chat with my friends, not indulge some punk kid's taste for drama.

I guess that apart from the obvious cause of the decline, the question which should be addressed is what constitutes a quality forum? So here goes -

Posting a picture of a coin on a coin forum isn't very interesting. We all have coins, nobody is impressed. Very quickly everyone starts posting pictures of their equally unimpressive coins and you have a 30 page topic of people talking past each other. Now post a picture of a coin with an interesting but largely unknown history, explain the history behind the piece in a lively and engaging manner and you'll have a worthwhile discussion.

Topics centered around coins are not necessary boring. Here's a perfect example of a good choice of subject matter and apart from am ill informed interruption or two, quality replies leading to a first class topic. I'm sure I'm not the only one who learned a great deal from it.

If you prefer a non coin topic here's a great example of what the Numista forum used to be and hopefully will return to at some point. It's a rather long but entertaining thread where everyone tries to explain their locale and culture in a lighthearted manner. Nobody is pretending to be offended, nobody is arguing, no bitching, just enjoying each other's company and stories. Sadly such a thing would be impossible in the current toxic atmosphere. Thomas, I believe you will enjoy the read.

Wow, that was a great read......that's what I am talking about......get to know your fellow collectors, learn something about the world all at once.
Sadly I think you are right on with the current state of this forum......it's obvious that some people don't get it.

Btw is a "young fella" the same thing as " bubba " here in the south? Just wondering....

As I said earlier, i have been indulging in internet forums since the mid 90s, in a range of geeky/dorky pursuits like coin collecting, model railroad building, sailboat racing, bicycle building, mountain climbing, and what all, much of which I can't do anymore, and in every case, I have seen this exact observation made about the percieved decline of [whatever]" this forum" happens to be. On one forum, I guess it was sailinganarchy, more than 10 years ago, I even wrote this concept out as a theorem, briefly - regardless of actual subject matter, forum posters experience the inevitable turnover of a forum population as decline, never progress. As a support for my theorem, you might check /b/ and see if there is a thread with this exact subject line, there is a good chance that there is. that forum is so populous and turns over so fast it makes a good laboratory, the experience of decline is almost constant, and the experience of improvement utterly absent!

as a corollary of my theorem, it can also be said that in all "off topic" sub-forums, there will always be a thread about the nature of forums.

As regards the use of " young feller", I have no idea what bubba means, so can't comment on that, but as I was writing, I felt myself gesticulating with a cane and raising my voice, saying in effect "in my day...", i meant nothing except to mock my own raving, and feeling my age, a little.

Good points you've made there; aside from personal subjectiveness and general pessimism, the fin de siècle*, "decline of the X", "endoftheworld-ism" sort of thinking has become very fashionable amongst the self-proclaimed righteous in a wide range of things; I see that humbug being hawked in media, in music, and now even in coin forums .... to go looking for bees to put in one's bonnet and being miserable isn't a very worthwhile hobby to spend the rest of your days on Earth doing now, is it?

The forum is alive and well; dance to whatever beat you want, but if you can't run with the big dogs, don't scapegoat anyone for that.

*Interesting reading on the subject of continually perceived decline by reactionaries.
So many reactionaries and charlatans, so little time to read.

Leaving for the Saturday morning fleamarket soon, (late night+ Sangria = late start), Basil Thai for lunch then we're taking the pupster for a long walk around Weedon Island. If we get home in time we'll spend a few hours at the shooting range enjoying our God given 2nd Amendment rights. Dinner is undecided but the front runner is 3 steaks on the grill, the extra one being cut up for the pupster and the kitties.

Sunday is going to be spent at home. Gardening is a lifelong passion, even the boring stuff like cutting grass. Can't get the lawn tractor started this year so we'll be doing it the old fashioned way. (clearly I need to start visiting auctions, or up my mechanic game) I've recently replaced an ugly chain link gate with a very beautiful metal framed archway of Confederate Jasmine. After a week of rain there's a lot of new growth to be tied in. It smells like a French Whorehouse (I guess) If it rains or the thermometer reaches 90 then I'll continue with my long term project of creating the perfect hobby room. There will be beer.

I love the fresh air and the warmth of the sun on my back. I don't understand anyone sitting in the corner of a fetid room banging out dozens of spiteful posts to strangers on the internet. Be happy, enjoy your life. It's not a dress rehearsal, this is the one and only.

I can only conclude that miserable lifestyles breed miserable people who obsessively try to share the misery under the guise of "smashing the Patriarchy" on coin forums or some such nonsense.

Me? Oh I'm happy being me and I hope y'all are happy being you. Either way, I would always hope that I retain enough manners, class and basic civility to live and let live.
